Description
I found it very frustrating when I first got into Ubuntu, and was looking around at the Packages to install, that I had to have the installation CD in my computer. Especially since it was a laptop and I didn't have my CD Drive in.
I eventually found out how to remove it as a repository source.
It should not be set as default, or perhaps, if it isn't there, Synaptic should go and look on the internet. Which it doesn't.

there is an option to select or unselect CD ROM as repository in Synatips, but it's really Hidden!!! Better idea is this option can be more visible

I fully agree with this idea. This is the first thing I do every time I install Ubuntu. I never have that CD easily available after the install. Not to mention it's the best way to get the most up to date packages. +1

+1. It should ask during ubuntu installation or allow the user to click "I don't have the CD-ROM, so please download the packages" and "remember my selection" (which essentially disables the CD-ROM repository.

I always burn on CDRW's, which I have 5 of, which none are labelled.

Is this still set as a default repository? I've never been prompted to insert the CD to install any software.

if is set to be the default and it is MISSING it should move to the next one (ie. internet repositories), and if no internet connection can be established, move to next one, and so on ...
it stalls on cd-rom and if you cannot provide it, loops forever on the same question!

I totally agree...as a newbie, O recall this was very frustrating. I left my install CD at work, went home, and couldn't install anything. At a minimum it should be smart enough to sense if that disk is still in the cd drive...better yet would be to prompt you for it, with an option to select "I don't have it so stop asking!!"

I am on the Hardy Heron right now, and it is default. It should be removed.

And for the people who don't have internet access?
If there will be some sort of automatic repository selection then this is a good idea, but otherwise it's not. If you have installed Ubuntu from disk...then obviously you had access to a disk. Network access can make no such reasonable assumption.
For those who have dial-up, installing any software from the disk will always be desirable over downloading the same thing from online repos.

Doesn't it/can't it revert to the other repositories if not the CD is available?

I say move it to be second, but don't remove it. It would be nice if it would look to see if the disk was in, or at least ask you if you want to use the CD or the internet. That would be ideal.

@ rs3york
I do believe my idea said "if it isn't there, Synaptic should go and look on the internet. Which it doesn't."
That is really the main problem here, as long as it will automatically go to the internet after the disc is missing, or automatically go to the internet if the disc is missing, I don't care, as long as does not say, "Unable to Install" or whatever when I do not have my disk in, and it is listed as a source.
@nooodlesgc
I know what you mean.
