Related to: Nothing/Others. Status: New
Description
Ubuntu should have an easy way to backup and restore your files/folders, something similar to mac's time machine, i.e. http://www.apple.com/macosx/features/timemachine.html

It doesn't have to have the animation unless the compiz people create a plugin for it.

Ideally with these options:

Gnome integration
Convert any folder to a backup folder at the click of a mouse button
Set backup intervals
Backup to external drives
Backup to external servers via internet
Enable/disable encryption

For the ubuntu fans who don't know what mac's time machine is, check out this link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n055CqFnjyo

Try this:

https://wiki.ubuntu.com/TimeVault

I think that covers everything except encryption and converting a folder with right-click.

I've just installed TimeVault and it does not seem to let you set when you want the snapshots to occure, i.e. every minutes, every hour, every day, every week, every month, every year, or at specific dates...

FOR THE LOVE OF EVERYTHING, PLEASE CHECK FOR DUPES!!!

A) Why the hell have 50 people voted for this, when this is duped almost every day.

b) Why the hell has nobody marked this as a dupe.

I think its official, Brainstorm is a mess, thats only going to get worse.

There's also Flyback, I think that's better.

his would be great if it was intergrated!

WTF. Still not dupe

Auzy wrote on the 6 Apr 08 at 08:30
And its up to 95 so far.. And about 16 hours

LOL @ Auzy. Instead of just whining about it like an old woman, why not help the mods/admin to find the duplicates?

Auzy wrote on the 6 Apr 08 at 11:06
I started to notice a trend, thats why i stopped.

The trend I noticed was that I stopped seeing less and less dupes already marked. 2 or 3 days ago, I started seeing none except ones I marked.

So I stopped for a few days, to see how things went.. And what do you know, I still haven't seen a single article marked as a dupe.

Which means 2 things, either the mods have become uber efficient, which if true, would mean this should have already been taken down.

Or, the old members all got fed up.

Even after making my rant a few hours ago, nobody has still marked this. I'm not going to, because I'm curious how much worse it will get.

Btw, I did +0, cause its a dupe anyway

So I think its now to safe, nobody is marking dupes really..
Because in

Also

TimeVault is no good as you cannot set the date/time for reoccuring backups

And FlyBack is no where near integrated enough to even consider.

We need a simple, straight forward backup solution similar to Mac's Time Machine.

ubuntu_demon wrote on the 6 Apr 08 at 17:26
IMHO this solution should use rdiff-backup

nami wrote on the 6 Apr 08 at 19:08
That seems to be the best solution so far however, I know it uses ssh to but the files stored are not encrypted and it is not integrated with gnome as it does not seem to have a gui at all.

Still, this is by far the best solution.

Auzy,

I think that dupes are a good thing, it goes to show that the idea is popular. If it is getting voted up to the front page of the daily and weekly ideas every time, then it goes to show how popular they are. And that being the case, they are getting more exposure on the front page. Eventually they will get to the dupes and mark them as such, an combine all the votes (remember, dupe votes don't get combined) so there is no harm done.

I don't think its a bad thing for a popular dupe to be voted up to the front of the daily or weekly page. And in fact, I think it is actually better. This way really popular ideas will be promoted up and truly show their value above and beyond the semi popular ideas. The fact this is duplicated every day, and still voted up, is proof enough that this needs to happen.

Also, what if there is a popular idea, and its say 2 months old and stuck on page 20 of the greatest ideas ever, and every time someone posts it, it gets marked duplicate of the original immediately. Then what? You never know what kind of temporal popularity it has and you are forced to accept defeat on that idea, because guess what? that idea on page 20 will NEVER see the light of day again.

I am not trashing your argument, I think you have a valid point. i just think that dupes that are popular really aren't all that bad, and they will eventually be marked as such.

Give the ideas a chance to traverse the daily and weekly sites before marking them as dupe. You know what? ideas that are 2 months old existed before there was a such thing as a daily or weekly popular idea, and they never had a chance to gain popularity. Or what if the original has a really crappy description but keeps stealing the limelight of the more popular dupes?

And the setup of the site is such that once an idea is old (even if popular) it will never get more votes again once it drops off page 1 or 2 on the most popular ever pages. Until they fix that problem (maybe through having random popular ideas at the top of every page) then the dupes need to have their own shot in the limelight until they are over 1 week old IMO.
