Description
I can't seem to find a way to open MS-Publisher files on Linux. Everything else works fine, i.e. Word documents, Excel documents and so on, but Linux seems to be missing the ability to open MS-Publisher files.

Oh yes, I'm missing that to. Neither OOo Draw nor Scribus can open PUBs.

Leave your proprietary file formats at the door.

Switch to open file formats...

Eldmannen,

It is difficult when schools will not switch to linux who insist on using windows, so when kids come home with PUB files and find that linux does not support them, we have an issue...

I am sure there are many other examples.

I agree, at my work, everyone uses MS office, and a lot of those people are barely computer litterate, and probably cant even comprehend what open/proprietary software is, or why it should matter, and abuse MS office products for everything, so whenever I have to open one of their files for my job, I sometimes cant (i.e. Publisher files), or I have to deal with massive formatting/compatibility issues, and its a real pain, especially when you have a lot of real work to do...

If your job requires you to use Microsoft products, use them on Windows, or via VM Ware, or Crossover Office, or whatever. Quit trying to turn Linux into Windows

mortshahl,

in that case, maybe the linux community should stop microsoft work, excel and all the rest of microsoft's files from opening in linux too then...

put it this way, if linux could not open ms word, excel, powerpoint, even less people would consider linux.

that is a fact, like it or not.

Also, for me, I don't need all that stuff as I am a php/mysql webdev. So I have no need to spend 100s on microsoft software. However, when other family members need word, linux can handle it, but when they need ms-publisher, it is a problem.

I agree, this is NOT making Linux to Windows or trying to work with Publisher.

It's just about a Publisher Viewer or Converter to Scribus/Writer/Draw

Yes, at a minimum being able to view .pub files would be very helpful for when you have to be able to access them. A nice runner-up option would be a straight converter program to convert .pub to .odt or a scribus format. Of course, the best would be to be able to open, edit, and save .pub files directly to/from Scribus or OO.o.

As I understand it, PUB files are by far the worst file format M$ every invented. Even the different version of Publisher have problems with other versions. A READ-ONLY import filter in OOo or Scribus, to help people migrate AWAY from [the beast that is] Publisher might have some merit.
Abstain.

I received an invitation in Publisher (.pub file) and I couldn't open it, so I missed the event. :(
