I believe a beta will not be included in Hardy. If the final version is ready for the release it will be included, if not then firefox 2 will be default.

edm1, no. After beta 5, the rest of the stuff done will just be polish, so beta 5 will be included with Hardy by default.

XSP wrote on the 2 Apr 08 at 23:37
Firefox beta 4 is already in Hardy as the default. 5 will probably come downstream in the next day or two.

why would you add a beta program to a new OS version?

wleoncio wrote on the 3 Apr 08 at 01:27
I just read that the stable release of FF3 won't be out before june. I don't see what would be wrong if Hardy came with FF2. It's not like we were going to die if we couldn't use FF3... The computer experts that want to have the latest already know how to install Firefox Betas, but why leave a newbie with an unstable version?

carpex wrote on the 3 Apr 08 at 01:37
Come on guys. Firefox 3 b5 is already more polished than 99.9% of programs in software history. Just take a look at the list in Synaptic and you'll see that a lot of the Linux experience revolves around programs that are not at version 1 yet. You just have to swallow the pill: you are a beta tester, whether you like it or not.

I think that must be include firefox but when is done.

FF 3 beta 5 is such an improvement over ff2 that it would be very stupid to not use it, just because it's called a beta. getting out of beta is a marketing/PR thing more than anything, different people adopt different attitudes towards that.

Vista is a damn good example of a POS software that should have been called alpha 1 upon release... and wasn't

John Karahalis wrote on the 3 Apr 08 at 03:34
If Ubuntu updated major software more often, this would be a non-issue. There are plenty of ideas which call for this. See this bug - http://brainstorm.ubuntu.com/idea/4330/ - and related duplicates.

And, Ubuntu made the error with dapper to not upgrade to FF2.
So the had to stick the whole release circle (3 Years) with an outtimed firefox.
Using FF2 now would be the same.

Think of it, hardy is a LTS release, would anyone want to use Firefox 2 in 2 years, really?

btw, FF3 IS included in hardy, if you didn't know.
And activated by default...

so this idea is invalid/done.

While Firefox3 is still in beta, the people that made if state that it is less crash-prone, uses less memory, is more secure, and faster than firefox 2. And they were talking about the Beta.

Hardy will likely ship with whichever Beta or Release Candidate Firefox is going to be at in a couple weeks (likely Beta 5).

Shipping with Firefox 2 for a LTS release is a mistake. There may come a time in the next year or two in which a security bug may turn up that cannot be fixed in the 2.0 code base, and people will be recommended to update to 3.0x.

The question is: Once Firefox 3 is release (in June?), will it be added to the main repository, backports, or not at all?

eliaspoveda wrote on the 3 Apr 08 at 13:48
beta 5 is already out.

Agreed. FF 3 has far fewer crashes, and it is much faster than FF2. There is no reason not to include it in Hardy, beta or not.

This is a waste of space and time. Let the developers do their work and complain after Hardy comes out.

It will just be available trough the updates.

Hardy is LTS, should it really include any BETAs?

mvasil wrote on the 5 Apr 08 at 15:52
@Ape that is already been asked multiple times

nizarus wrote on the 5 Apr 08 at 23:58
it is now done.

catterly wrote on the 6 Apr 08 at 14:49
Yeah, this has been done, I linked to the launchpad bug which is marked as Fix Released.

cougarten wrote on the 7 Apr 08 at 00:13
FF3 is great, but incompatible to so many extensions, that I will change back to FF2

fredbezies wrote on the 19 Apr 08 at 13:48
cougarten : it is developer extensions fault. Anyway, ff2 will get its end of life in december 2008...

So, you'll have to upgrade to fx3 anyway.

m_gol wrote on the 21 Apr 08 at 00:40
I agree that including Fx3b is not a bad idea. Nonetheless, Ubuntu site claims that Fx3b4 is the included version, not beta 5. I would prefer to have beta 5 in repo...

And I would really really want Hardy not to include Fx3 for all the 3-year time. When Fx4 is out, it should be included. How can we say about safety of Ubuntu if software is not updated after end-of-life of a particular, old version? (see Dapper and Fx1.5).

m_gol wrote on the 21 Apr 08 at 08:22
I see that information at main site changed and now Fx3b5 is claimed to be included in Hardy. So the thread can be closed. :)

This idea is already implemented in Hardy Heron.

Indeed, someone should mark it as completed!
