bug This idea is a duplicate of Idea #21: Professional-looking bootloader.
Written by nizarus the 1 Apr 08 at 14:55. Category: Look and Feel. Related project: Nothing/Others. Status: New
Rationale
For a better user interface replace the default grub boot loader with the beautiful grub-gfx.
Since feisty there is an ubuntu grub gfx theme in the repository but no grub-gfx package.

I want my bootloaders simple.

Bootloaders should follow the KISS principle.
Keep it simple stupid.

Bootloader should pass the control of the system to the kernel as soon as it gets passed control of the system by the BIOS.

Bootloader should be minimalistic.

Do I really really at GRUB long enough to care what it looks like?

A better idea would be to do like Apple's Bootcamp bootloader and have the damn thing hidden altogether! Then if we press a certain key or something, we can have the pretty gfx bootloader.

But I don't want it to affect my boot times!

@Eldmannen : grub-gfx is simple too :) to the KISS principle i add an N to be "Keep it simple stupid and Nice"

@DanRabbit : the default wait time in grub is 10s with dual boot, which is, i think, the case of majority ubuntu users. And grub is the first thing that a new user will see after installation so i think that giving a pretty nice boot loader will be more valuable as a black screen that give the impression of the 70th years computers.

Well, I agree with DanRabbit, that the bootloader should be hidden altogether and not show itself unless we press a certain key or something.
