Can't you already do that? I'm on Gutsy and when I plug in a USB stick, I can right click and edit via the tabs. Or is this something else?

I support this feature on the condition that it won't create a support nightmare.

@MighMoS: It works with USB sticks, but not with partitions on the hard drive.

yeah, this does not work with partitions on the hard drive. Theres are a messy solution in the forums somewhere, but for a newbie like me, i'd like to rename a label with the same ease as if it were a directory name.

I guess that this is possible only when you have administration rights. But why not to open a window asking for password when you want to do this?

It has been impossible to implement in Gnome due to deficiencies in present virtual fs layer. That layer will be fixed in the next release, making building this properly into the properties dialog of Nautilus possible. Just bump the developers to do it upstream Gnome and voila.

See Mac OS X. There, renaming a HD is just as easy (and works exactly the same) as renaming a file.

So should it be. mark it, press F2, label it. As simple as it can be.
