Description
It would be interesting to add an option to choose between the typical virtual desks and a new cyclic desktop, rendered by compiz fusion, may choose the length.

It's better to understand the concept in the main image:

Already it is a little eye-candy but as option would be great!.

You can already use a cube to do this.

actually it is subtly different... it implies different images (or portions of a same image) on each cube face, a "cube rendered as a cylinder in 3d views, and perhaps the possibility of aving just one "curved desktop" displayed in a continouos flow rather than defined "faces". I'd love to see something like this in compiz.

It would be cool with a Compiz plugin to do this.

But honestly, I think its just a gimmick.
If you ask me, it does not look like it provides usability.

Virtual desktops provide much more usability.

It should be added as a plugin to compiz. Anyways, in all practical purposes desktop wall, does this. The only thing remaining would be to make it cyclic and have scroll the wallpaper.

But seriously the thing is soo lame, I guess some users might like it, but virtual desktops are more effective.

I just hope 360desktop.com didn't patent this trivial idea, I also wonder if the desklets, plasmoids and all those nonsense is able to have a web page one.

This is done with Java's Project Looking glass as well. It is very nice effect and is great at blurring the line on how many virtual desktops you have. As VR/AR improves I think this style of desktop will become standard.

What about taking this to the next step and just make it a sphere.

The desktop kinda looks like a vtwm desktop, just prettier.

Could take it much further than that, and use arbitrary geometries...
Choose from a cylinder, a sphere, a torus, a hypercube (that would get confusing, but hey...), Mobius strip, Klein bottle, etc. Some would look quite strange due to the curvatures and rotations involved, especially the sphere. Would have to restrict things a bit to prevent upside down windows and such.
Combine that with procedural backgrounds, and you could have huge never ending desktops where you are constantly searching for your windows! :p

More seriously, a simple cylinder desktop, without discreet views, as shown in the 360 Desktop would be okay. (I've seen it done elsewhere, years ago)

Agreed; a single sliding/rotating desktop would be very nice. Even if it was just a big plane that you could scroll around on using, e.g., ALT+[arrow keys] this could be quite useful.

I think it would be a good idea, but without that annoying-looking advertising on the desktop.
