Idea #6112: Activating "Num lock" at startup

bug This idea is a duplicate of Idea #3596: Num lock on by default on login.
Written by Zoloom the 30 Mar 08 at 19:03. Category: Hardware support. Related project: Nothing/Others. Status: New
Rationale
At startup the "num lock" or "verr num" pad on french keyboard are disabled. All keyboards are using this, so i think Ubuntu can easily make that.

1 - Installing the numlockx package
2 - Just edit the file /etc/gdm/Init/Default and adding before exit 0 :

if [ -x /usr/bin/numlockx ]; then
/usr/bin/numlockx on
fi

It's very simple, and usefully for all users.

Thanks to all Ubuntu's developers for their work.

Solution #1: Auto-generated solution of idea #6112
Written by Zoloom the 30 Mar 08 at 19:03.
Ubuntu Brainstorm was updated in January 2009. Since the idea #6112 was submitted before this update, its rationale and solution are not separated. Please vote accordingly, and if you have the necessary rights, please separate the rationale from the solution. Thanks!

Ubuntu should not change the state of the Num Lock key.
You can change the state of the Num Lock key in the BIOS.

Thats a great feature for a desktop, but on a laptop, you wouldn't be able to type for example:

Num locks off:
Kevin
Ubuntu
Linux
Num locks on:
2ev5n
4b4nt4
35n4x

Not everyone needs it on.
You can already set this in most BIOSes.
You can also set this per user (at least in KDE).

If none of the above three apply to you, you are likely in a very small group and for that you should use the package ;)

At desktop, you can easily press NumLock with one finger.
At laptop, you'll get bunch of cryptic words (like Kevin's ones), swear aloud, then use BOTH your hands to turn NumLock off, then Backspace, then writing everything again.
So, bad idea.

Good idea, I work alot with numpad and its annoying when I'm typing in some data, to discover a few secs later when I look at the screen that all I pressed were some arrow keys and the page navigation.

Please search before posting new ideas. There are already at least three ideas with this very same concept.

It would be nice if it was an option. I know for my desktop I like it on when I start my machine up, but for my laptop I can't use the keyboard until the NumLock is disabled.

With a little GUI maybe all will be agree ? Just an option in Keyboard properties ?
