Idea #6088: Ship Mono.19 with Ubuntu 8.04

Written by georgwaechter the 30 Mar 08 at 13:34. Category: Programming. Related project: Nothing/Others. Status: New
Rationale
Ubuntu 8.04 will ship with the old Mono version 1.2.6. But there is already the new stable version 1.9. So why include an old one?

Why include it at all?

It's probably too late too update it. Because things like f-spot and tomboy depend on it. And Ubuntu Hardy is already in Beta for a while. But it would be nice.

Next version should update it in the repo and remove it from the default.

This is why I probably will choose an other distribution.
I need mono for my cross platform development but 1.2.6 is unusable old. I am not happy because my app can not be supported on Ubuntu.

Yeah, Mono support in Ubuntu should definitively improve. I'm sick of all the FUD that trolls are spreading on this website. If you don't like Mono - don't install it! Or switch to some non-user-oriented distro.

Since Ubuntu strives to become a user-friendly desktop Linux, I don't see the point why we should deprive our users of excellent software such as Beagle, F-Spot, Gnome DO, Banshee or Tomboy (just to name a few).
Apps written in mono are easier to maintain, quicker to develop, and offer much better long-term perspectives. In short - Mono is here to stay.

It's strange Ubuntu didn't update it. They updated MonoDevelop to 1.0 and that came out the same time Mono 1.9 did. Considering Mono 1.9 is a big improvement over 1.2.6, it was a mistake for Ubuntu not to include it.

It might be a bit late for the release of Hardy but I assume there will be a .1 release (since Hardy is a LTS) so could Mono 1.9 be included in that?

With Mono 2.0 on the horizon and Hardy staying around for a while it would be nice if 2,0 made it via a backport (after getting tested fully in Hardy+1 or +2).

Installing Mono 1.9 on Ubuntu 8.04 for those who can't wait until Canonical decides to act.

We should consider first if MONO=M$ dependent software is REALLY necessary in Ubuntu:

I'm sure: NO !
