Idea #5978: put a "FORCE" button on the error message when mounting faulty NTFS USB dirves.

Written by captainpugwash the 29 Mar 08 at 02:28. Category: Hardware support. Related project: Nothing/Others. Status: New
Rationale
It drives me insane when I try and mount other peoples NTFS Usb drives and they were not properly shut down by Windows. (I hardly ever run Windows now)

Ubiuntu comes up with a message saying something like; go back to the windows machine reinstall and then shut down again.

Or go to a terminal and type a heap of "FORCE" instructions to mount the USB NTFS hard drive.

Why cant we just have a force button on the cant mount error message that we can press and it does the terminal commands for us. I realise it has the possibility of NTFS errors occurring but so does forcing it through the terminal commands.

The difference is that YOU know the risks you face when you force a mount. what's joe public going to blame when he uses his USB stick with Ubuntu and he loses all his files?

I think a better option is to come up with an open source checkdisk utility for NTFS volumes so that unsafely mounted volumes can be properly repaired, rather than subjected to a somewhat risky forced mount.

flip314: There is already one ;] ntfsprogs package gives you a lot of stuff ;)

I think this idea is insane. If you need to do it often, just write a bash script to force mount, but it can NOT by enabled by default. Just can't.

Just warn them when they push it and ask for confirmation. Sounds like a good idea to me...

If you mount an unclean NTFS filesystem... at least let's mount it read-only so no damage can be done.

But I like the idea.

Or even better: a button saying:
"Clean" and Mount...

@TBH: if that's the case, then there should be an option to scan and fix the filesystem before mounting.

I still really don't like the idea of forcing an unclean FS to mount, even if it's read only.

The latest version of NTF-3G solves this problem automatically:
