Description
It drives me insane trying to diagnose if my sound card Microphone input is working correctly.
it would be great if I could have some kind of visual feed back like the old "VU" meters we used to have on old fashioned tape decks.
Getting skype to work or dealing with any "sound in" / "mic in" issues on Ubuntu has been a nightmare to trouble shoot. this would make it a bit easier.

Yeah, so Ubuntu will appeal for audio production.
Then rappers can use Ubuntu to make music, and talk about it in their songs.
Yo, this is how I sing,
I got da bling,
bought mah girlfriend a ring,
I am da king!
I've got Ubuntu,
Mah homie got Kubuntu,
Called mah cousin and he got Xubuntu!

There is already a vu meter for alsa but it's hidden. You have to clic right on the gnome menu, go to edit menu, under Sound &Video, tick the "Recording Level Monitor", et voilĂ !
In hardy, you can also install the pakage "pavumeter" to monitor pulseaudio, or do the same stuff if you want to monitor alsa instead

I completely agree with this. The lack of visual feedback in either sound properties or GNOME's mixer annoys me. It's hard to debug sound in any way, and Mic is even harder. It's impossible to know whether just a program (Skype) is failing, or the mic in general. Add to that the confusing (to newbies) sliders in the sound mixer, troubleshooting is annoying as hell.
Making Gnome's sound recorder app give actual feedback on if it's recording would also help. This drove me insane when troubleshooting: if you click record, nothing happens, there isn't any feedback at all on whether it's recording, or failing to record, or if the application is working at all.

I meant "right-clic", not "clic right on"...
Where the hell is the "edit" button here?!

Hmm, thanks for the tip! That would have helped more back then. However, it should not have been disabled or so hard to access. Enabling it by default or making it accessible from the volume monitor would help a lot.

"Sound Recorder" should come with a VU meter.

Amen to this. Debugging microphones is really hell. And an item where Ubuntu needlessly looses point from any new user.
