I spoke the to the developer directly about this on IRC sometime ago. He said "It would be useful, but I don't want to clutter up the S&R menu. Maybe when I have time."

My suggestion is talk to 'pbor' at #gedit on irc.gnome.org and see what he says.

I would actually like it if Gedit used the same approach for searching as Firefox does. I don like having an extra window hanging around.
