Idea #5893: OpenOffice.org upgrades in the same ubuntu release

Written by neffscape the 28 Mar 08 at 04:06. Category: Office. Related project: Nothing/Others. Status: Won't implement
Rationale
OpenOffice.org is a key application in ubuntu desktops. IMHO it should be possible for users to easily upgrade their OpenOffice.org version when a new release is made available on the official website.

This behaviour is not something completely new in ubuntu: Firefox already updates every time a new version is made available on the web.

I just want a similar behaviour for the OpenOffice.org suite. Vote, people, vote!

Developer comments
Ubuntu never includes a new version of a package after the release is out.
Firefox is updated only for security updates, not feature update.

If you want the newest version of OpenOffice.org, you can download it in the official web site.

The focus of Ubuntu is to make the system stable, secure and easy to use, and the software that came with it must be tested and approved by Canonical.

Put it in the universal repository and make it available for everybody as you do with firefox!

I would add that on the official website an ubuntu version of OOo is missing for many localizations. If you care about people using ubuntu, give us the opportunity to CHOSE what we want, reopen this idea.
