Idea #5835: GTK Chooser should show image previews

Written by krs the 27 Mar 08 at 13:27. Category: Look and Feel. Related project: Nothing/Others. Status: New
Rationale
GTK Chooser should show image previews in general, like it is done in Mac OS X:
http://www.oreilly.com/catalog/applescripttmm/figs/I_2_tt193.png

When using the file chooser (for e-mail attachement, or web page upload) It's impossible to switch the file browser to get thumbnails.

Good idea!

Isn't this feature implemented already? I see thumbnails now when I want to attach a file in emails.

krs wrote on the 27 Mar 08 at 15:46
In hardy?

brownknight wrote on the 27 Mar 08 at 15:50
I use Gutsy 7.10 and this feature is already in it.

Remco wrote on the 27 Mar 08 at 15:59
It's an optional feature. Programs just have to start using it.

krs wrote on the 27 Mar 08 at 16:11
Can you describe more? Here's wath I have with Gutsy :

1: go to http://bayimg.com

2: Click the "upload" button

3: this is what I get : http://gloomydream.net/bazar/Capture-File%20Upload.png

No preview, and no way to switch in thumbnail view...

krs wrote on the 27 Mar 08 at 16:12
Not the upload button, the "browse" button, of course.

Remco > How to enable it?

I don't know, I'm not a developer. You can't enable this yourself. It's an optional feature that application-developers can enable.

In Windows you can just right-click and select show thumbnails and it's very easy to pick a nice picture.

Not all files can be previewed.

So its better of as an optional feature that the program can call.

GtkChooser($foo); = no preview
GtkChooser($foo, SHOW_PREVIEW); = preview yes

Agree.
This gtk chooser has always been too lame...
every other system does that.

In Hardy, this feature is already implemented.
