Description
I couldn't believe it today that you can't edit/open a .theme, .desktop, or .config file.
Just create an empty file and name it with any word and one of the upper suffix; doubleclick on it and GNOME will tell you that it is "no directory". Funny.

I file that here because I don't think it's a bug, it's a lack of a feature: open these files with a nautilus servicemenu "Edit..."

I filed a bug as well... Think this should be fixed.

Yes, but only for text files, it should detect that it is a plain text file.

I would say it would be better to have a dialog come up to ask what program to use (with a list of possible programs to use). I can see it being dangerous if an unknown file was opened and it contain a virus.

That being said if it is a binary file I 100% agree with you.

That's good, i miss that.
It works already with the hardy fiel roller.
If you open a file IN an archive, file roller asks you what program to take!

With Gnome 2.22 we can now open .config and .index files with gedit, but nautilus always says that the .theme are not directories.
