Idea #5720: Make Drag&Drop possible everywhere in GNOME

Related to: Gnome. Status: New
Description
Drag&Drop is such a intuitive and simple action - it must be promoted.
There are many things that already work in Ubuntu/GNOME/KDE with Drag&Drop, but there is much that can be improved:

- DnD an image from Firefox to the Desktop should place that image there, not a textfile with the link to the homepage.
- DnD from the icon on the left side of the URL in the Firefox address bar to the desktop should create a .desktop file with a link to that URL.
- DnD of devices onto the Pastebin should unmount them (like OSX)
- DnD of a Desktop file into a mainmenu/submenu of GNOME should create a menu item.
- fix the Nautilus-in-list-view-doesn't-accept-DnD-files issue: Launchpad bug #61237
- DnD file from anywhere (e.g. Desktop) to a folder in the "file open" "file save" dialogs.
- DnD a file into an edit box should insert a file:// link - KDE has this; Idea #3027
from Idea #4105:
- DnD Attachement from Thunderbird to Nautilus
- DnD Files From File-Roller to Nautilus
- DnD Picture from Nautilus to OOo

...and many more, please submit your ideas, I'll put them into the description!

-DnD an image from firefox to the Desktop should place that image there, not the link to the homepage.
This already works.
-DnD from the icon on the left side of the URL in the firefox adress bar to the desktop should create a .desktop file with a link to that URL.
This already works.
-DnD of Devices onto the Paperbin should unmount them (like OSX)
This is a usage metaphor that Apple created, it's not intuitive to any users except Apple users. Most new users expect that it will erase the content of the device.
-Dnd of a Desktop file into a mainmenu/submenu of GNOME should create a menu item.
If permissions allowed that, it already would. At present it creates a shortcut in the panel.
-FIX the Nautilus-in-list-view-doesnt-accept-DnD-files issue!
This is an upstream bug that was already reported and is being discussed as the link you provided shows.

This whole list of ideas was in my opinion a waste of time.

You're right, but I didn't say "exactly these DnDs".
Sorry, the 2 first Firefox things work already, I had tested them before and sort of didn't recognize it.
BTW, but if the image you drag contains a hyperlink, it does not work: it will copy the hyperlink, not the picture, without asking.

DnD->MainMenu/Permissions - thats the point.
why can I then change the main menu with the Menu Editor (with the same -user- permissions?) Because there is also a per-user-menu, and that should be also possible per drag&drop.

BUT what I wanted to start, was a brainstorm topic to collect thoughts about more drag and drop.
if you don't like the ones i posted, they were just ideas, feel free to post others, but don't rate the whole topic down.
The topic title is generic.

DnD file from anywhere (e.g. Desktop) to a folder in the "file open" "file save" dialogs.
First I thought this is nonsense, but sometimes I forget to copy something into a folder and when I open the "file open" dialog I remember it and want to do it just now.

It is possible to copy a file FROM anywhere OUT OF the file open dialog to e.g. the desktop by DnD. But other way should be possible too.

An if you drag an object to a text box (file foe example)then object address is inserted in the text box.

If we're at it with drag and drop, fix this one as well :-)

@onno-itmaze

Man your post was a waste of time. This is a good idea, if you have something useful to share, post an idea.

I would like to be able DnD a file as root almos from a directory to any other with more restricted rights.

@NachoBlanco: thanks to GVFS and PolicyKit in upcoming Hardy you'll be prompted for password when copying files to location where you don't have permissions for writing.

Hi, I was just about to post pretty much exactly this idea. However, I specifically want to copy/paste from konqueror to thunar, for example. Copy/paste should work from any to any, including "weird ones" eg. copy visible from GIMP, paste as an image file in thunar. As you only mentioned drag/drop in your idea, I thought maybe you would want to add copy/paste aswell. (+1)

Most annoying for my girlfriend and me is not to be able to drag & drop files/folders in "Save as ..." and other dialogs.
