Related to: Nothing/Others. Status: New
Description
During install offer the option to not format the / partition, but instead delete and recreate all directories, that have a special role in the system (like /bin, /usr, /etc and so on) and leave those, that the user himself created for other purposes, as well as the /home directory alone.

This would avoid the need of a separate /home partition.

+1

Wouldn't you need to reassign ownership and reapply permissions to the folders that were left on the system?

sounds do-able

I like this idea.

But, what about /var (eg /var/www/) and the like?

Any user-created things are usually in home. Maybe offer the option to create a separate /home directory in a more visible location.

also:
preserve etc (archive?)
preserve anything worthy in /var by moving it somewhere
preserve /usr/local by leaving it alone
preserve /opt by moving it somewhere? hard to say, because users use it (autopackage) and Ubuntu also uses it. (I think?) If Ubuntu doesn't use it, leave it alone.

have it check the install diff and allow anything not in the list to be preserved. A option to place all preserved data in a separate folder mind come in handy.
