Description
I know, that Monkey audio is an unnecessary format, because flac already does the same thing. But occasionally files happen to be monkey audio. Currently there is no way to play them without running Windows software through wine.
Afaik, there is some problem with the monkey audio license, so it will not be on the cd, but it would be nice to have it in the restricted codec packs.

Monkey's Audio is proprietary and nobody uses it.
So there are no reasons to support it just many reasons not to support it.

I see no harm adding it to the restricted codec packs. Even if only 2 users use it, its been worth it then.

FFMPEG handles Monkey... That sounds wrong.
There are several tools for Monkey audio in Linux. There is an XMMS plugin, there is MAC, the Monkey Audio Codec for Linux, K3B can convert them to FLAC.
Search google for: mac-3.99-u4-b5-s4.tar.gz

@XSP: The mac thing works in dapper but not in newer versions. The players mentioned on the ffmpeg homepage cannot play monkey.
@fragro:In the future please read posts COMPLETELY before replying to them. This is annoying.

Right, it is not GPL, but it should be ok.

steve196, it works for me in hoary using Audacious.
Anyway, it would be nice, to have more players supported.

I would like Totem asks you for installing the APE codec as it currently does with MP3 and other formats.
Audacious worked great also for me in Ubuntu 8.04.1.
