Idea #5607: Create panel applet/program that monitors RAID and warns if failure

Written by zooounds the 24 Mar 08 at 19:30. Category: System. Related project: Nothing/Others. Status: New
Rationale
A nice graphical warning when your RAID fails would be really, really nice. Not like now:

cat /proc/mdstat

Now, very few people use RAID.

But we should an application that can monitor S.M.A.R.T and RAID and warn on failure, and show disk information, file systems, volume labels, disk partitions, etc.
Allow to run fsck, mount/unmount, etc.

Monitoring SMART and actually deducting useful information from it is a daunting task.

Eldmannen, thats only cause nobody knows how to get it installed. Theres still no easy way to get raid running from memory during install (at least software raid).

+1

Auzy, That is a problem of user knowledge. I think spending a little time reading a How-to on RAID would solve your issue.

Personally I like the idea of a RAID monitor. Heck, I can get a widget that tells me the weather, but can't get one to tell me if I am having disk problems?

I think this is a good idea and I would be willing to help.

Yeah, thats what I'm saying though, its a great idea..

But still, users shouldn't need a manual to get software/Hardware raid going (in OSX, full control of the raid is built into the normal disk utility). So thats another problem I'd love to see addressed. The moment you need to pick up a manual to do something, something needs improvements.

Just was bringing it to attention (I think there has been a few ideas posted on it anyway).

I have tried do this myself - but it failed beacuse I have no experience with GTK+ and I found no good documentation about using GTK+ from perl or python.

I agree with bigredradio: it'd be nice to have a small widget similar to the ones you now get for wifi or bluetooth or indeed the weather :-)

Integrate with SMART is a good idea.

For the record, I would donate money to whoever wants to do this applet.
