Ubuntu should should branch out its installation mediums with builds featuring built in kernel support and optimizations for newer Intel (Core 2) and AMD (Athlon 64 x2, Turion 64 x2) processors. Installation mediums should be made available for x86 and x86_64 architectures.
An alternative to this would be to add a prompt to the installation process asking (or auto-detecting) basic processor information. For example "Which best describes your computers processor?". Available answers should include newer Intel and AMD processors, or the option to select "I don't know", which will then either install an optimized or basic kernel.
While I realize that the average Ubuntu install is fast, flexable, and will "just work" on nearly any PC, there is a select user base that will benefit from the enhanced instruction sets that an optimized kernel can provide these chipsets.
While users are able to build, customize, and compile their own kernels, this can be very taxing, time consuming, and confusing to the average user and adding to that, bug reports submitted via platforms with custom kernels are rejected.
