Description
The problem :
Flash plugin (or Gnash plugin) eats CPU when there are many Flash animations in a website.

My solution :
Install the Flashblock plugin by default in order to choose which Flash animation runs.

Flashblock plugin :

This will be too confusing/irritating for the average user. Flashblock also doesn't look that nice.

Maybe, at the moment, when you choose between Flash or Gnash, there would be an option :
"add Flashblock plugin" (with a explanation what is this plugin)
May it be better?

I myself have Flash blocked.

But to make this default is a bad idea.

Thank you for your argument Eldmannen.

But why is it a bad idea?

Thanks to tell me about this extension. But it will cause trouble to the average user.

When browser like firefox use the plug-in pop-up block by default for the first time, i don't believe that it will cause trouble for average people...
So why not Flashblock?

People would probably think their Flash plugin was broken, and get annoyed that they have to perform an extra step to see their YouTube video of a cat on a skateboard. When it comes down to included software and features, it's important to think of what the majority of people would like, not what you would like.

I'm the feeling that average users are stupid for many Ubuntu users here.
It's not difficult to click on play if you want to play the video flash. Moreover you can easily authorize flash in the websites of your choice... The difference between Flash and Gnash is more complicated, i think.

I don't understand why ubuntu people are against this idea.

I think the reason it's bad to include it by default is because it's the type of thing that people wouldn't want forced on them. Yes, you can still see the Flash videos with this plugin, but that doesn't mean that _everybody_ wants them blocked to begin with.

Statistically, I think that people would want Flash to be shown, with the option to block it, as opposed to no Flash be shown, with the option to show it.

It may be a better compromise...
With Gnash, it's possible but with Flash no.

it is a good extension and I use it, but it shouldn't default.

I think this idea fixes the symptoms of the problem, but not the cause.

The problem is that Flash and gnash and all that crap requires a separate plugin to work with browsers. They don't integrate very well, and run in their own little world most of the time.

So what happens is that every time a flash file is run, extra plugins need to be loaded, a plugin has to be made for every browser everytime they are updated, and its duplication of code.

Instead of helping firefox optimise their javascript routines, we are instead programming a plugin which needs its own optimisation, which slows overall development. Furthermore, mobile devices don't often like new web plugins.

I propose we focus on developing a Flash editor Replacement which uses HTML/Javascript/SVG/AJAX instead. That fixes the core of the problem, as users simply need an up to date browser, and developers can focus on improving the browser instead of optimising 2 different things.
