Written by Linux.user the 23 Mar 08 at 07:19. Category: Hardware support. Related project: Nothing/Others. Status: New
Rationale
Drivers like nVidia or ATI graphics Cards, whose are very hard to install without internet connections.
pppoatm drivers for USB Unicorn modems (alice adsl)
Some drivers for scanners and cameras (mine doesn't work)
And PocketPCs? Linux still doesn't support them...

If I have done some grammar mistakes please excuse me, but I'm not english

I'd say that this is the same as http://brainstorm.ubuntu.com/idea/3932/ really, except mine is the implementation, this is just an idea, which probably involves my scheme somewhat, because the community will argue "we cant include non open source drivers on the installer".

Don't subvert my freedom only so your life gets easier.

Also, I think a more valid suggestion would be to be able to download restricted .debs for later off line use.

I'm not seeing why the drivers couldn't be included on the disk.

And I'm not saying installed by default.

The CD-Rom is already added as an apt source.

The Restricted Manager already pops up when it detects hardware that can use the drivers. It practically encourages you to install them. "One click and make your hardware work"

If the drivers were AVAILABLE on the cdrom, the restricted manager could install the package from the CD (as a local apt source) and save a lot of time downloading the drivers.

I know for a fact that Nvidias current license prohibits such an idea for their drivers. I like the idea of the restricted manager.
