Idea #537: Ubuntu needs a GUI based tool for mounting network shares

Written by jonathanmotes the 29 Feb 08 at 02:37. Category: Internet & Networking. Related project: Nothing/Others. Status: New
Rationale
Ubuntu needs a GUI tool so that samba shares may be truly mounted. The "connect to server" option does not really mount network drives and files on the shares are still not accessable from many programs. For instance, Eclipse cannot open files that are saved on network shares - even when connections have been created using the "connect to server" tool. This would also make it so that media players such as XMMS that do not have streaming support can play audio files from shares. A GUI frontend for the samba fuse utility may be all that is needed.

The gio/gvfs framework, which will be implemented in Hardy, will make this happen eventually. I doubt it will work perfectly in hardy, but I would expect it mostly ready by hardy+1.

we should bypass Gnome Volume Manager and use Fuse directly.
