Idea #5349: Ubuntu advertisments for fans who own websites and blogs

Written by kumailht the 21 Mar 08 at 22:23. Category: Others. Related project: Nothing/Others. Status: New
Rationale
A lot of ubuntu users may own blogs and websites , they most probably love ubuntu and want to pay the community back.
if the ubuntu website can offer banner ads which are professional and unobtrusive, users can help spread the word.

the banners must be professional and convey the message clearly.
it should allow users to change certain aspects of this to match the website design.

only logo`s with slogans will not help as people dont know about ubuntu.

THE LINUX desktop market share is 0.65% [source:wikipedia] and we need to change this,

the banners will help in branding and it isnt hard to create.

we may also need professional introduction videos to the ubuntu desktop which can be used for marketing purposes.
it can also be included in the iso disc.

Flash banner?
God, someone shoot this guy.

Use a PNG banner.

i have said flash as it is the most common technology in the windows market and the windows market is what we aim on advertising at.
i hate flash and adobe but you have to grow up and face the fact that flash is installed on almost every browser today.
even firefox has flash by default.
if you use png you will have to squeeze your material in to a smaller area.
with flash you can gain the users attention.

even if it doesnt bring in new users, it will atleast make users aware of the fact that linux exists!

No, Mozilla Firefox does not come with Flash installed by default.

Many people have Flashblock too. Best would be a simple, clean, professional looking PNG image.

With a full-screen popup and annoying sounds you bring attention too, doesn't mean its the right way.

flash can't be unobtrusive. if it's anywhere, it's in your face. that's bad

I agree that we should not use Flash, but except from that this is a good idea! Therefore I'm promoting it.

The website does not seem to be owned by any of ubuntu staff or Canonical, but it does seem to be very well supported by them, particularly the marketing drivers.
