Written by ubuntu_demon the 21 Mar 08 at 10:07. Category: Accessibility.
Related to: Nothing/Others. Status: New
Description
downloads should go to $HOME/Downloads. XDG_DOWNLOAD_DIR should be set to "$HOME/Downloads" instead of "$HOME/Desktop" in the file ~/.config/user-dirs.dirs.

This Downloads folder should be the default download location for firefox and this folder should be bookmarked in nautilus by xdg-user-dirs-gtk (like Music,Videos,Pictures and Documents).

RATIONALE :
* less cluttered desktop and/or homedir
* still easy to access your downloads

My download directory is $HOME/Downloads too. It should be set as default.

I agree too. It is useful.

Downloads should go where user need.

Also user need to input where the Downloads dir must be created ( I do my Downloads folder on other partition - where I have space enough ). So if the user choose his prefered location DOWNLOAD PATH must be mapped there.

If user did not choose another location then $HOME/Downloads coul be default.

So I need to put PDF files on ~/Downloads/PDF and movies on ~/Downloads/MOVIES ...etc.

There will be nice have choices, no only blind rules, as follow:

1. User can select if the download go in Downloads OR on an other folder.

2. User can SELECT where in ~/Downloads the download will go (even a choice for presets will be ok [ to pre-set where you want to download pdf's, mp3's, etc ] - in Preferences). There in Downloads -> user make his folders(PDF, MP3, MOVIES, etc) - then automatically folder names and paths are parsed and offered as options in a select box in Download To dialog.

For example Download to:
> Downloads/PDF
> Downloads/MP3
> Downloads/VIDEO
> Downloads/GAMES
> Downloads/ETC

Why not ~/Movies instead of ~/Downloads/Movies? But do what you want.

I think more should be done in terms of very easily being able to access your Downloads before this is implemented.

For example, the way the new MacOS has dealt with downloads.
If I had to go to Places->Bookmarks->Downloads everytime I wanted to get to a new download, I would be very annoyed.

"I think more should be done in terms of very easily being able to access your Downloads before this is implemented."

I agree with that sentiment. If the Desktop weren't the default, new users would have a tough time trying to find what they downloaded. IMHO.

If you are going to do this it would be nice to put a launcher on the desktop for the downloads directory.

Voted no.

Finding a download on the desktop is trivial. This setting is easily changed by an advanced user who wants different organization.

I always download stuff, deal with then, and file the proper files where they belong. Having a "downloads" folder would create clutter on the home folder.

As long as I can later on delete the home/downloads folder and change the downloads back to the desktop, I'm ok with the change, even though I don't agree it's the best to be done.

I completely second wladston's statement.

No.

Desktop is the best downloads folder.

Almost everyone expects them to be on the desktop so leave it there. If you want to download them someplace else just
change the setting in firefox.

korin43 wrote on the 21 Mar 08 at 21:47
Do not want.
If I want to keep something it's not going to stay in a "Downloads" folder because it was be insane to find anything in it. If I don't want to keep something I'll delete it.

Personally I like my download going to the Desktop so that I can do what I want with them.

In general I think the option should be there for everyone to customize how they please, but I don't think another folder in the home directory is necessary.

I agree that downloaded items should remain on the desktop.

After all, the concept of a computer "desktop" was modeled after a physical desk. As such, it is understandable that the computer destkop would be used to hold a miscellany of currently relevant items.

Personally, I use my desktop to hold either items which are either relevant to temporary tasks or items which I have not yet found a better place for. Downloads fit into the latter category.

I always make Downloads folder in /home/user/Downloads

Auzy wrote on the 22 Mar 08 at 04:32
I'd say mostly everyone I know using firefox, does not leave them on their desktop, because it gets cluttered up.

The issue people are overlooking, is that you only have limited desktop space. After you have too much, you have to go to folder view anyway

gabtrat wrote on the 22 Mar 08 at 06:36
I think this would be a good idea. New users can always open their downloads from the Firefox downloads manager.

@Auzy - Regarding your comment "The issue people are overlooking, is that you only have limited desktop space."

I would argue that for many people desktop space is not an issue. I rarely leave items on my desktop for more than a day. I use the desktop only to temporarily hold items until I find a better place to put them.

For example, Firefox is set to download to my desktop. I am very pleased with this behavior because, as I explained in my earlier post, my desktop serves the same function as a real, physical desk. Files and folders reside on my desktop only temporarily until I find some place better to put them. For example, when I download a document in Firefox, I read it and then either remove it from the desktop or relocate it to my /home/john/Documents folder.

Granted, such a behavior is not ideal for everyone. A person, for example, who downloads hoards of media via Firefox would likely rather have all of those files routed to a "Downloads" folder automatically, as this topic suggests. But because Firefox and most other downloading applications allow the user to specify a default target folder, it seems that it would be unnecessary and intrusive for Ubuntu to force a "Downloads" folder onto the user.

Well, I don’t know what the fuss is all about. I for one like my downloads to go wherever I tell them to. I am mightily pleased every time they do this, and as the download manager remembers the location used the last time, I couldn’t care less, cause it’s using my own default, of a kind.

@zarkov

The problem is that you have to setup _every_ tool to download to that directory. That is a lot of manual work.

What we really need is a xdg-user-dirs gui in preferences, where you can change the folders. Also when a user renames the folder the system should pick that up and change automatically. (possible using inotify)

Also, when you select a different folder in that gui, it should ask if you want to move the old files there.

Finally, you should be able to select between 'flat' mode or 'program' mode. Program mode would make programs create a directory of their own in your chosen directory to store/use their files.

So for example, in program mode: ~/Downloads/Firefox and ~/Downloads/Pidgin

In 'flat' mode, rhythmbox and banshee both use ~/Music

Alexander wrote on the 23 Mar 08 at 15:37
How about this solution:
- Files are downloaded to ~/Downloads
- The desktop contains a link to ~/Downloads
- The user is notified somehow that there are newly downloaded files in ~/Downloads

By default everything downloads on the desktop. This is great I think.

With this suggestion, "new users" would have to search for where this download went by default?

When people are annoyed to download on the desktop, they can simply change it in their favorite applications. In my case, I changed this for $HOME/téléchargement (French for download) in Firefox and KGet, not $HOME/download.

Programmers time would be mostly valuable somewhere else.

Just do it yourself! Make a folder called Downloads and change the setting in firefox via Edit>Preferences!

How hard is that???
