Description
Neither Rhythmbox nor EasyTAG or any other linux program I found was able to save music ratings into ID3 tags. So you have to retag all songs if you change the file structure or the music player.

Is there a place in ID3 tags for such purpose? And what about all the other music file types (ogg, flac, shorten, wav, etc. etc.)?

I don't know how things work with ogg, ... but I know that it's possible to store some kind of custom data in ID3 tags. And there are programs for other systems that save ratings.

It is not possible to put ratings in ID3 tags.

Even if it was possible, it would be a stupid idea since people often share or transfer MP3s to other people, and ratings are highly personal.

@Eldmannen: Why would you care if other people that might however get your mp3s agree with your ratings? If they don't like them they can easily change or delete them.

And where did you get the information that it's not possible to put ratings in ID3 tags? There is software that does exactly that and the ID3 homepage reads:

"The following frames are defined in ID3v2 informal standard. Users can define their own frames, if needed."

I think it would be a better idea to define an open standard for music libraries.

Possibly something XML based, though i don't know much about XML (all i know is OO.org use it for their structures) would XML be really slow for searching or any other problems?

If all the major Media players and taggers (Rhythmbox, easyTAG, Amarok, even iTunes and Windows media player) took advantage of this it would be easy to switch your media player if you choose to (the whole point of linux is choice).

Even if programs didn't use it natively but had the ability to 'Export libary as "open XML library standard"' that'd be very useful and solve this (and a few other) problems

@benpage

That solves NOTHING.
If i move a file, i loose all extra info like ratings, how often i played the file, etc.

Me too. I've been wanting to move my music files for AGES, but I never did it because I would lose all my Rhythmbox ratings... :-/

afaik all tagging languages (ID3, vorbis comments, etc.) support user generated "tags" which are non standard ones like "title".

afaik iTunes adds a rating tag to the mp3s...

according to http://www.mp3tag.de/en/ there is a POPULARIMETER tag (or see further down in http://www.anytag.de/forums/index.php?showtopic=7554&hl=rating+tag )

forgot to mention mp3tag runs fine in wine :-)

ID3v2 does support ratings. It was in many Windows programs I used years ago. It's a value from 0-255 set in the ID Tag - most programs will show a value of 255 as 5 Stars, and a value of 1 as 0 Stars.

Here is a short explanation of all ID3v2 frames:

http://www.id3.org/Frames

I didn't know until reading that that the Popularimeter also supports play count. Which seems a little redundant since there is also a Play Count frame. I'm sure there's some difference.

I think I'd like to see both. Though the latter may bother some, it would be great not having to worry about backing up a database file (often confusing and inconvenient for most) in addition to your music. It may even speed up loading a Player since it would cut a lot out of the database file. It would be a great step toward interoperability - not having to worry about one database not working with a Media Player you want to switch to.

Moving songs around, and even backing them up is a hassle. I don't rate my songs because:

1. I don't back up the database often
2. I may switch to different players
3. If you want to change the folder structure, file names, etc, your ratings are gone.

Maybe someone could add it to Rhythmbox/Banshee/Player-of-your-choice Bugzillas.

Wow, Banshee is one step ahead. Looks like it may be in a release not too far off:

Bug 532650 – [PATCH] ID3v2 Popularimeter (Ratings+Playcount) import/export
http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=532650

----------------------------------

I went ahead and posted it on the Rhythmbox bugzilla.

Bug 538549 – Use of ID3v2 Popularimeter for Rating (maybe Play Count)
