Idea #5198: gshutdown / kshutdown installed as default

bug This entry was marked as not being an idea the 25 November 11. If this is a bug report, please use the Ubuntu bug tracker.

Rationale
Ubuntu aims at everyday use. This means people will use it for multimedia purposes, such as watching tv or listening to music etc. And just like you can set a sleep timer on your tv set at night, there exist those little usefull apps gshutdown and its kde equivalent kshutdown.

I used to write my own bash script to set a sleep timer until I got to know the tools mentioned above.

Linux newbies won't tend to write scripts and searching for sleep timer with synaptic doesn't lead to gshutdown. So why not install it by default? It could also be integrated in a conrolled way when using a multiuser system.

@Rioting_Pacifist: Allthough your comment is meant ironically, I think yes, that IS exactly what ubuntu brainstorm is made for: Presenting ideas you think could improve ubuntu, in what way you ever think of. And if you don't agree: just vote it down!

@lsdark: no, of course not. But you have to know, that gshutdown exists. And I didn't and wasted my time by typing

sleep 30m; halt

when I wanted a sleep timer (ok, I could have used google, ubuntu forums, which is too many steps regarding accessibility or I could have just written something more user friendly with gui and so, but that's reinventing the wheel)

I concur. I would even go so far as to put it somewhere prominent in the gnome power settings controls.

Possibly also build into firefox and nautilus. A 'shut down when copy/download completes' function would be really nice, and I could see people using it, and being glad they use Ubuntu. I certainly would. (Just last night I wrote a script to interface with the ktorrent dcop and shut down once my share ratio on the iso I downloaded got to 3.0.) That's the sort of thing that should be in by default.

The Ubuntu Desktop Team ( https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DesktopTeam ) decides what goes onto the Desktop CD. Please direct your suggestion to this team.

Closing in Brainstorm.
