Description
It'd be great if hibernating/return from hibernate would be as slick as the boot/shutdown screens (or even slicker since the boot/shutdown process is not perfect either, but that is already covered in idea #37). Of course, having it rock-solid is more important but this is already covered in idea #94.

I personally do a "real boot" only when the kernel changed or my hibernate failed (this happens once in a while). For people like me, having a nice progress bar during the "return from hibernate" and "hibernate" phases are as important or even more so than having a slick "normal boot".

FWIW, currently (with Gutsy on my HP 6710b) I get the following:

On hibernate, I get a black screen (in text mode) with a blinking cursor for a while, then a bunch of messages related to USB stuff, then a long pause again then it shuts down.

On return from hibernate, I get the Ubuntu logo (as for a normal boot) and the placeholder for the progressbar but it doesn't get updated, and there is an ugly white rectangle below the progressbar (the width of the whole screen and approx twice the height of the progressbar).

That's exactly what I get, too. If it works.

I get the same thing. At least hibernate works fine, but it's important to be visually consistent. I could see how those console messages could be intimidating to new users.

Exactly. Good idea!

perfect!

this slick/smooth pass would be great also for BOOT and SUSPEND ...

when my pc boots it flickers like 10 times, going back and forth between a shell prompt, black screen and a starting GUI, an then it changes the cursor couple of times between Xorg's default one and GUI's default one ...

when i suspend my pc it does the same, first it dims the entire screen, then it flickers 2 or 3 times a black screen, then the command prompt appears on the screen, and then goes to sleep ...

lynx: There is a spec on Launchpad for a slicker boot sequence which reduces the number of mode changes. Too bad it's been deferred since about Edgy now.

Andrew, do you have a link? I was unable to find anything through search ...

Maybe it was deleted or something, because I can't find it anywhere either. But it existed, I know I'm not crazy! Maybe somebody else can find it.
