Openoffice can be sped up considerably by unchecking the box in preferences for "java environment", and additionally by using the quick start buttont that is resident in the system tray.

Perhaps it would be possible for these settings to be inherent in Ubuntu?

I've noticed particular speed improvements in OpenOffice on the Hardy development releases.

I heard that the new (2.4?) version of OOo is faster. So maybe there is no need for any changes?

Here's a wiki entry on what you lose by turning off Java in OOo. However, the speed increase is noticeable.

this is a duplicate of

plus the solution is simple: use quickstarter

Open office can be really fast if you activate "systray quickstarter"

go to options -> memory

here is a pic:

Using quick start IS NOT a solution, since it decreases boot time, making idea:
#42: Speed Up Ubuntu-Gnome boot time
in even worse state.

i use openoffice with windows and linux, and i tink is very slow with and without quickstart.

OpenOffice runs quite fast (much faster than MS Office) when it is loaded entirely to RAM at bootup. Loading OpenOffice (as well as Gimp, Firefox, and other core apps) to RAM is a boot option with many Linux distros, although not ubuntu.

See my suggestion:
