Idea #4985: Change the default file save/open directories

Written by Eldmannen the 18 Mar 08 at 02:34. Category: Others.
Related to: Nothing/Others. Status: New
Description
The default directory to save files in most software is in the users home directory.
i.e. /home/bob/

I propose to change it, to take advantage of the specific media subdirectories which already exist in the users home directory.

GIMP -> /home/bob/Pictures/
Text editor (gedit) -> /home/bob/Documents/
OpenOffice.org -> /home/bob/Documents/
Rhythmbox (open) -> /home/bob/Music/
Totem, VLC, MPlayer (open) -> /home/bob/Videos/

I would propose to edit this idea to include defaulting back to the /home/username/ directory in the event that a user does not have/want these default directories.

I think this is a good idea and would save a lot of clicks and time in the long run, but should only impact users who choose to use these directories.

I think it gets much more organized if it's :
/home/user/media/music
/home/user/media/movies
/home/user/meia/photos
/home/user/documents

it's really a matter of taste...

How about using these defaults and also make it easy for advanced users to change the defaults (via gconf or something like that).

I think that there should be a default folder but the ability to change the folder easily.

@wladston .. why would that be a reason to vite this down?
That's another discussion/brainstorm.

He is just suggesting to use the default xdg-directories.

If the xdg directories are not there, it should default back to ~.

I don't like these directories. "Pictures", "Documents", "Videos"? Aren't they *all* documents? Should we have "JPG" and "PNG" sub-directories inside Pictures?

"Music" is fine, but for other basic directories, why not things like "Work", "Family", and "School"? Why put pictures of my family in one directory, and videos of my family in a completely different directory?

The default folders are just imitating Windows for no good reason. We should be using logical folders that group files by subject, not by file type.
