How about Compiz Screenlets? Or else try KDE with SuperKaramba

Yes, I want a little cute kitten to walk on my desktop and stuff, and he can sit in the corner and look cute!
Then he can lick her paw, and yawn and stuff!
Make that kitten widget, please!

Ubuntu is for lots of different kinds of people and all age groups. Widgets could be an easy way for non-technical users to tweak the desktop in their own personal way.
Don't rule out the silly/cute widgets just because they are not providing any substantial technical benefit. E.g. I bet a lot of kids would love to have little pet animal (cat, bird, dinosaur..) do funny little things on the screen while they were working. Silly? Certainly. Cool for kids? Certainly. Bad for Ubuntu? Not at all.

I am not sure what comes with Ubuntu by default--but does this need to be an Ubuntu thing? Can't users get GKrellM from the repositories? Interoperability with the Mac might be cool. Wasn't KDE or Gnome working on something similar?

I'm working on Screenlet's speed in my launchpad branch. I should have a stable release soon.

Oh, and Screenlets should support widgets soon.
We already support SuperKaramba themes.

Something similar to what KDE 4.xx is doing would be nice. I also like how Vista has done the configuration handles on their widgets. I also like how they are added by clicking the little button on the dock. Both KDE 4.xx and Vista have a very clean look for the use of widgets and their configuration. I think Screenlets could use a lot of improvement in these areas.
I think KDE is definitely on the right track. Gnome should either discontinue gdesklets and start over or revamp the project to be more clean and useful.
Note: I am a Gnome (Ubuntu) user, not a KDE or Windows fanboy. Keep an open mind and don't make this into a Gnome/Windows/KDE/OSX war.

I'm very much enjoying Screenlets so far, it seems to be much better than gDesklets was...but it is still early, and does not run well or even at all sometimes if Compiz is not available, and there are still ALOT of machines out there without the ability to run a 3D composited desktop for various reasons...

The Gnome desktop people need to get a widget system for GNOME fast!! OSX has done it for years, Vista does it, KDE4 is gunna do it. Where is Gnomes answer? Widgets are great, but at the moment I don't get to use them on Ubuntu and that sucks.

Some of us fail to see the usefulness in them. Regardless, screenlets is the way to go about this - see getdeb.net in a day or so, as an updated version of screenlets will be avialable.

At the moment it is not easy to add Widgets on the desktop.
So I hope there will come a easy GUI for.

Definitely !
I think we should start from scratch and get rid of gDesklets, Screenlets or aDesklets.
