Written by spyyder the 16 Mar 08 at 01:32. Category: Accessibility.
Related to: Nothing/Others. Status: New
Description
Ubuntu should provide administrative tools to control how a computer is used. The ability to control access to various feature, programs, file systems, etc. It should include web content filtering, black-listing, logging, and most traditional content control features. This is absolutely essential if Linux is to be remotely considered in the corporate environment.

Possible Applications:
1) School Environments
2) Public Terminals
3) Parental Controls
4) Office/Corporate Environments
5) Enterprise Environments
6) Countries with Restricted Access

*Note: This idea is similar to "Parental Controls" idea submitted, but people don't seem to understand the full implications of this idea.

The application Sabayon already provides the beginnings of this level of functionality. +1 for it to improve and be better implemented in ubuntu.

I think Canonical has landscape for this:

http://www.canonical.com/projects/landscape

but I am not sure if it can do all mentioned above..

Ubuntu CE has some really good parental apps built in that could be used (especially for Edubuntu). The apps are fairly hard to crack if you don't know the password to get into them and they can block out programs, websites, and documents from "unauthorized users".

tbrminsanity: I actually used the CE apps (forget what they are called at the moment) and they were pretty decent. They could use some work cleaning up the interface and the logical display of the gui etc, but it was at least workable. I'd like to see those tools added into default Ubuntu install (or at least added into repositories).

I don't understand why this GUI ( parental control of Ubuntu CE) is not available on Ubuntu depot ??

I agree with spyyder, we should actually be ignoring landscape even exists, because there doesn't seem to be a free version, at last I checked, it was about $100 per node (which means my house would cost over $300).

If you are interested in the Timekpr project I started, you can go to this site and download the deb. Please read the instructions.

By the way. It works great. Give it a spin.
