Description
Linux is 17 years old...and there's no online backup solution in the open-source world. A very well featured program is Acronis True Image, but the linux version is very buggy and unstable. Actually, the best solution to backup the partiton when the system is up is the LVM snapshot. But for a newbie it is too complex. Yes, it exists MondoRescue for this, but it works rarely and it is not so flexible...

I really like this idea. I was assuming that something like this would already exist - I just hadn't looked for it yet.

check out backup-ninja, although it does not have a nice GUI, it's a fully functional backup solution for home users to back up directories and/or files

it works over any device or ssh connection as well

to back up your entire system you can use partimage (and partimaged if you want to back up something on a remote server), as the partitions backed up should not be mounted for partimage, it's best to use it from a live CD like Knoppix

backup-ninja basically uses another tool (and only deals with its config and scheduling) called rdiff-backup. you can use it directly if you prefer so.

In the repositories: sbackup

Simple Backup Suite for desktop use
Simple Backup Suite is a set of backend backup daemon and Gnome
GUI frontends that provide a simple yet powerful backup
solution for common desktop users.

Backups can be written to local directory or remote servers using
Gnome VFS technology. A fine control is possible regarding what
folders and files to backup. Files can be excluded even with a set
of regular expressions. Regular backups can be scheduled.

This tool has been written with Google sponsorship during Summer
of Code 2005 with mentoring help from Ubuntu.
