why is easy to answer: skype is malware, if you define malware as some program, which does things, the user does not want it to.

-skype scans /proc (probably to find debuggers and do not start if any are active)
-skype scans .mozilla/* (probably to find proxy-addresses. why can't skype just read the http_proxy variable?)
-skype allows execution of code, it gets from its server
-skype obfuscates itself, its protocol and trys to hide from debuggers (google for "silver needle in the skype").
-skype make it hard to build an opensource alternative client

So allo? But skype supports every platform. And if Skype boycotts us, you'll be off whinging for linux.

We need it anyway because we don't really have any other proper AV support

And your reasons allo means that Firefox is alot malware, it can execute java code, flash code, etc.

-1, its not installed by default, and you'll be whinging when they finally do boycott it. In fact, it just creates a + for using windows.

Skype isn't malware at all. There was a long thread on this in the skype forums.

The problem is *many* people use Skype all over the world, and if skype wasn't available to me on linux, I would then have to use windows. I can't encourage people to use other things as nothing else has the firewall traversal capabilities that skype does and I can't encourage my non-technical family and friends to set up firewall rules on their routers.

This is a very bad idea and should be ignored. Yes, encourage people to use other stuff if you can, but don't cut off options. Skype isn't trying to hack your PC. Put your tinfoil hat away.

I can't because I have friends (Windows users) who use Skype, and their friends again use Skype, etc. so it's very hard to convince them that they should use something else than Skype.

I don't like the fact that Skype is closed, proprietary software and that Skype keeps their protocol secret. If there would be an open source program that could use the Skype protocol, I would rather use it instead of Skype itself.

As for now, I'll give it a minus. Because, if you want to be able to boycot something, you'll first have to come up with something that makes what you want to boycot obsolete...
Besides, if you put money into something and you want to sell it, do you want peole to copy and sell it for half the price?
Because, that is what Skype is trying to prevent...
After all, Skype is a quite complex program, for example the capability to shoot holes in your firewall, in a way that no other program I have ever seen is able to do. I suspect the program needs some information for that and that probably is the reason for scanning your computer to find out its configuration...

Sorry for my poor English, I'm not a native speaker and when I don't know how to say something, I constantly try to put it in another way, which causes my English to be quite long-winded.

I use Skype for Linux with my Windows friends and I use Ekiga for Linux with my Linux friends. I too would prefer an open VoIP system rather than Skype, but it serves a need. I will use Ekiga for most of my contacts, but when I need Skype for Linux I will use Skype for Linux. And it now supports video!
