Description
I think it would be really useful an application like this to manage the whole system don't you think? An all-in-one application to install software and configure your system. Things would be a little more simple for new users. For those who doesn't know this app, its the default configuration tool for OpenSuSE.

I think Yast LIKE is the key. Back when I was working on Suse systems Yast was great. One centralized place to manage all the settings with a text based or graphical frontend. I think Linux falls behind Windows for the lack of a good centralized place to manage all the servers on the system.

There are various projects out there to help on this, but they all fall short of the MS tools. There should be a standard stack like LAMP that would have real configuration tools that managed it from start to finish.

Yast just has a (well deserved) bad name because it is slow, and is constantly doing all kinds of stupid irrelevant things.

I just registered to this page to say: NO! Please don't implement such a stupid thing!! I tried OpenSuSE several times, and I have to say I just HATE(!!!) this freaking tool/OS. IT can do so much things, but I don't think that people, who want an easy to use OS (like Ubuntu is one) can handle it. I think it's not needed, because all you need can be found in the Panel Menu with no more then 2 clicks. -99

@sedra (no opensuse thanks)
Word!
@asdf46 (I think Linux falls behind Windows ...)
Right, too. But not because Ubuntu doesn't have such a tool. Much more it is because Opensuse DOES have it. I myself think that the "System" button in GNOME-Ubuntu (don't know about Kubuntu, Xubuntu etc.) is central enough, and it's also intuitive. I just miss some things (for example a GUI for setting up internet-connections (whereas pppoeconf is good and easy too if you find it, but for that there is Yelp)), but as a whole it looks good to me. (OK, I just had to get rid of this (and sry for my bad English knowledges it's not my first language)

For a desktop environment I agree the existing tools aren't bad, but for setting up servers they are near non existent. I appreciate the fact that you hate Suse because of that, I left it for that reason. I still think there is a need for a well developed configuration tool. If you disagree please cite specific reasons. Thank you.
