Idea #47: Provide a publicly accessible hardware database

bug This idea is a duplicate of Idea #40: Create a better hardware database.
Written by Alan Pope the 28 Feb 08 at 15:31. Category: Installation. Related project: Nothing/Others. Status: New
Rationale
One of the stumbling blocks for new users to Ubuntu is not knowing if their hardware will work, or if new devices are supported.

There should be an online searchable database of "known working" hardware to make it easier for people to ascertain if their system will work.

Whilst it would never be perfect due to subtle differences in hardware (different chipsets for example in devices with the same model number) it would greatly help new users.

Solution #1: Auto-generated solution of idea #47
Written by Alan Pope the 28 Feb 08 at 15:31.
Ubuntu Brainstorm was updated in January 2009. Since the idea #47 was submitted before this update, its rationale and solution are not separated. Please vote accordingly, and if you have the necessary rights, please separate the rationale from the solution. Thanks!
