Description
ok, the default image viewer doesn't display .gifs correctly (they aren't animated). neither does F-spot. ok, we have how many image viewers by default and how many of them work with gif files?? This is just basic stuff that needs fixing. We can do better than this...

Gifs should be depreciated anyway. In the past, it was a patent issue why it was axed out of many products. Either way, the only people who still use them, are web designers.
There are very few uses.. In most cases it makes more sense to use movie files, or if you need it basically a motion image file, support APNG.
I dont disagree, I think the patent has expired now, so we can add them. So I'll +1, any extra support, but we should be trying to get the word out there about alternatives

patents aren't a problem. g-spot can handle gifs just fine.
I simply think that if it exist (it does) and is used (it is) it should be supported.

There's actually somewhat of a resurgence in the use of gifs in internet culture. Particularly on sites like 4chan.

All the more reason to avoid them like the plague. 4chan is like reading an AOL transcript from 1997.

It isn't about promoting a format here, it's about supporting it and enabling the user to have access to the format of his/her choice. Maybe add support for APNG too, but no reason why not for GIF, +1.

Patents sucks. Luckily the patent is expired.
GIF sucks and nobody should use it, because it is old crap format.
I agree that Eye of GNOME and other image viewers should support animated gifs though.

AND IT IS SO OLD: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/eog/+bug/35545
(It is considered a "wishlist", too
So annoying that this isn't fixed yet in 8.10. Why isn't gThumb the default viewer then? It's little things like this that make me worry about pushing Ubuntu on family and friends, people who don't know or care what a gif is, don't want to figure out why it won't work, they just know they should double click an animation and see it animated.
