Description
When I upgrade ubuntu I find it frustrating that I have to download things like VLC, amarok, compiz, AWN etc all over again. I would be good if you could use synaptic or apt-get to generate a script that records all of the applications you have installed, and by running this script on a new install, you would be able to download all of your usual programmes in one go.

In Synaptic, "Save Markings" and "Read Markings". With 'dpkg', there are '--get-selections' and '--set-selections'.

Can you explain what you mean please? Are you saying there is already a way of doing it?

yes there is a way, save markings to export a list of currently installed apps, read marking to install that list again on your new install
