Idea #4559: Eye Of Gnome

Related to: Nothing/Others. Status: New
Description
The Eye of gnome image viewer should permit me to grab the image using a hand tool so I can move around and view the other non-viewable parts without forcing me to use the scroll bars. This is so basic and fundamental I can't believe it was not implemented long ago.

It does. Middle mouse click. Or scroll wheel click.

Middle click is unintuitive and left click does nothing.

Then recompile it to do what you want. It's free software. And Gnome questions should going to the Gnome team. They have a page specifically for ideas in Eye of Gnome.

Middle-click is hardly unintuitive. You're trying to do something with the mouse. Left click and right click have well-known, standardised meanings. What other button could you expect? Either way, it's a popular choice for panning in many graphics apps, like blender. Perhaps it just seems unintuitive because you're used to other apps or platforms. "Intuition" does depend a lot on pre-conditioning/past familiarity, unfortunately. In those cases, there will always be a conflict, and not everyone can be pleased.

XSP that is so silly,so anyone that wants a change has to be a software developer?

This attitude has contributed to the unpopularity of linux amongst desktop users.

XSP wrote on the 14 Mar 08 at 03:09
No, not everyone, people that want a specific feature should add it. It's free software. That means you get what the developers want. If you want something different, you usually have to do it yourself. And for the unpopularity of Linux, a larger user base doesn't make an Operating System better. Look at Windows.

Also, since you want to do it with the Left mouse button, hold control and use it. That works too. You don't have to be a developer to do that.

Please because of it's large user base Windows gets features through applications far earlier than Linux. The OS might not be very good buts it's applications are better.

The main purpose behind this Ubuntu brainstorm popularity contest is so developers can get a better idea as to what the user want the most.

Maybe you missed the memo.

Agree fully with pt123 on this one.

Middle mouse click is more then good enough for me, so -1. Imho. they should use there time on something else.

I don't get it it. This works for me already in Arch Linux. I am using EOG 2.20.4.

Perhaps it's already fixed then?

Frants wrote on the 14 Mar 08 at 17:32
I can move around the picture with left mouse button. EOG 2.20.1 :O

A quick research: I have changed the default value of zooming to use the scroll for zooming. This makes left-click get the "drag around the picture"-feature.

gconf-editor --> apps-->eog-->view-->scroll_wheel_mouse YES.

There's always some dolt who thinks that using hidden non-standard features is how things should work.

Listen, I said, a hand tool. PERIOD. I didn't say some hack on the wanna-be XP registry. I want to position my pointer over the picture, grab it, drag it either up and down or right and left and let go on the point of the picture I want to see. I don't want to have to modify some dorks implementation of the registry just so that basic functionality is available to me.

You are the kind of guy that needs to go out in front of his car, prime the carb, and crank the rotator just to get your car started. That's you. You could even hire someone part time to crank the wheel for you so you can hit the starter button yourself. Or you can devise a system better suited to the human being in us.

CAN'T YOU UNDERSTAND!!!!!!!?????? UBUNTU IS FOR THE HUMAN BEING. PLEASE GO BACK TO GENTOO.

Frants wrote on the 14 Mar 08 at 18:49
I agree this is a feature which should be available by default.

But still. You're acting like a 7-year old kid. Don't blame me. Don't call be stupid things. You had a problem, I gave a quick solution so you could have your bloody feature at once. Stop crying and being an idiot.

XSP wrote on the 14 Mar 08 at 19:46
Gentoo? Gentoo is for noobs. :)

The point I was trying to make is that if you are too bothered to learn how to use the application and instead come here and post a feature that already exists, you're going to get a response that is as sarcastic as your post is useless.

By your definition, a human being is a brain dead illiterate. If you want a FREE operating system, learn to use it.

I agree!

@Jimbo99

You obviously miss a big point: middle mouse button is used for panning almost everywhere these days. Check browser, check MS Word, check MS Visio, check Corel... And the list goes on.

A hand tool as tool (e.g. as in GIMP's toolbox) in EoG is wrong simply because EoG has no toolbox.

Since Hardy, perhaps this one should be marked as implemented? Right?
