Idea #455: Schedule downloads for updates

Written by scorpfromhell the 29 Feb 08 at 01:56. Category: System. Related project: Nothing/Others. Status: New
Rationale
There should be an option for scheduling the download of updates, so that the downloading can happen in the middle of the night or whenever the internet usage is otherwise low/nill or is free of cost (some providers have such data plans).

Solution #1: Auto-generated solution of idea #455
Written by scorpfromhell the 29 Feb 08 at 01:56.
Ubuntu Brainstorm was updated in January 2009. Since the idea #455 was submitted before this update, its rationale and solution are not separated. Please vote accordingly, and if you have the necessary rights, please separate the rationale from the solution. Thanks!

Solution #2: Simple scheduling of updates and software packages.
Written by big_danmahony the 7 Apr 09 at 17:39.
With the strict download limits imposed on many I believe it is crucial to include a simple scheduling tool to make maximum use of "off-peak limits"
This will be a welcome addition for anyone that has to watch every download that they make.

Solution #3: Delta (patch-based) upgrades
Written by cheesehead the 7 Apr 09 at 18:06.
Originally suggested in http://brainstorm.ubuntu.com/idea/13/ (and many times since), reduce download volume by applying a patch instead of replacing the entire package.
One such project is at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/apt-sync

Agreed and not to hard to do I'd imagine... a front end to a cron job and basically monitor the network adapters

Scheduling updates is something I'd love to see aswell (I was about to suggest it as a new idea before I found this in the search).

I saw a screenshot of 'a' update manager with a scheduling feature, but it wasn't Ubuntu, which leads me to believe it shouldn't be hard to implement.

Marked as a duplicate of a newer idea because it was marked implemented. Which apparenlty was an oversight as that should have been marked a dupe of this sooner.
