Description
It appears there's absolutely NO program under Ubuntu/Kubuntu/Xubuntu that allows you to SIMPLY and QUICKLY make Hard drive maintenance.

In Daper-Drake, there was "Disk-admins" who was a great beggining. Unfortunately it has disappears.

In Feisty, "Gnome-mount" appears... but still suxx !!! Buggy, not 100% Reliable... Hey, could you explain me why I have to tweak my fstab to read my external disk ?

What about Mark's sentence "every command line stuff is a bug we must fix".

Great, so please, make a (sudo) program who allows you to :

- Fscking whatever you wan't (including "/" system file on next stop/start)
- Mount/Umount whatever you wan't
- Edit Fstab with graphical tics and explaination, so you don't have each time to read a guide about what is "umask,auto and default"

THANKS IN ADVANCE

I posted something similar to this the other day asking that they essentially fix the mounting inconsistencies. Mounting of secondary volumes is a serious issue to adoption by home users and those that are not into computers. The process has to be as automatic as possible without there needing to be any thought on the part of the users, period.

A tool such as this is a good first step, but so far they have miserably failed the end user in ease of use when it comes to secondary volumes.

Great idea, I think it can be interesting to also have a facility to format partition and to name it. I know that you can format with Gparted and it works great, but you can't name easily a partition whatever the partition format is.

There also needs to be a simpler option to have have partitions (e.g. other OS partitions) not mounted. Currently even if you don't have the partition in fstab, HAL thinks it's clever my mounting that partition. This gets listed on your Nautilus and cluttering your sidebar with unwanted volumes, and its ugly 40GB Volume names.

There is a solution but it is not straight forward (and rather hidden), the biggest worry is that it will get depreciated.

By editing /usr/share/hal/fdi/preprobe/95userpolicy/10ignore-disks.fdi

I have been trying to get this idea moving with the developers for some time now. So far now there are 5 slightly different takes on this theme & I hope that when they see how many times it comes up---Well, I think you get my idea...

My take on it is: http://brainstorm.ubuntu.com/idea/2587/

For the mounting/fstab options, you can install pysdm:
http://pysdm.sourceforge.net/

(It's in the repositories).

Still, it's not an easy tool: There are lots of options.

I was planning on working on a tool much like this over the summer (in my spare time). So it goes without saying that I support the development of it. I guess I'll wait to see what happens with this.

"make a (sudo) program ..."

Too bad it's not as easy as:

sudo make me a program ...

==> sebsauvage :

Thanks mate !!! Pysdm is a great beginning !!! That is that kind of program I look for !!! But anyway, still little issues : In my fstab I've got sdb1/sdb2 (that are not mounted) and pysdm hasn't told about it...

There's also SHARES, what I like in this program is the direct view of Fstab :

http://sourceforge.net/projects/shares/

THESE ARE GREAT BEGINNINGS

==> Chipmaster :

Please, don't make a new program, you know, that's like the 300 linux distro : it's useless. Anyway, a C/C++ version of PYSDM could be nice, cause python isn't installed by defaut in Ubuntu...

==> jimcooncat

What I wanted to mean is that the program should be a root program (In fact you don't have the choice for that kind of program :D).
