Ubuntu default is for regular users, not developers. Regular users should not need to compile their own packages. We would have to sacrifice other stuff to get the developer tools into the CD. Developers tend to have easy internet access and enough knowledge that they are not crippled by not having the build-essential by default.

Except regular user often do have compile their own package. Seriouslym I dare you find a "regular user" use Ubuntu for a week without havening to compile something. This should be defult.

What is the point in having it in the live cd and not installing it by default ??

I somehow with adityakavoor has said. Ok I understand that while including packages in the LiveCD and while selecting packages to be installed by default there will be lot of sacrifices done, similar to the movie editing process. But these days C is becoming such a basic knowledge that almost nearly every student of every discipline will be taught to write C programs. Anyhow if you feel I am only talking in the students' perspective, why cant we(Ubuntu) have custom LiveCDs like what Fedora people have, I mean the Spins?

If you need to compile something, then install it. If a regular desktop user has to compile an application, then Ubuntu has failed as a desktop OS.

Normal Ubuntu users (non-developers) install and use build-essential. See this poll for more details:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=193862
You can also read the forum thread I attached to the proposal in order to get more background information.

I agree with adityakavoor. this is already on the live CD but not installed by default.. it wouldn't hurt if this package would be installed when ubuntu is installed.
I proudly rated this up :D

there is no use in not having build-essential by default. i know world is wrapped by internet but what about developing countries. New users/ say 'new users becoming developers in ubuntu' in these developing countries may not know everything about this 'should install build-essential' to compile their c programs(for example). they may not know that its in the live cd. Ubuntu is all about giving users all the tools.
The simple build-essential package being installed by default surely is not going to take away any features from ubuntu... its going to add some extra comfort to developer users.. :-) and they can start their work right after they install the os

Wouldn't it be a security issue to have compiling tools available by default?
I remember reading in a Linux security book I have that all compiling tools should be removed from server, etc. Something about a cracker could compile their own versions of hacked utilities, such as ls.
