Idea #4520: Ubuntu Email Address

bug This idea is a duplicate of Idea #2174: @ubuntu.com email addresses?.
Written by chewit the 13 Mar 08 at 19:01. Category: Internet & Networking. Related project: Nothing/Others. Status: New
Rationale
I think it is about time Ubuntu got its own email address for users. Like microsoft have hotmail and Mac has .mac, Ubuntu needs to have @ubuntu.com address

It will be even better when you install Ubuntu for the first time and you setup your details. It will ask you to setup a @ubuntu.com account. Once complete it will setup the email address with the default email client.

Ubuntu is becoming more professional and easier to use for users. By adding a feature like this could push the Operating System to new users.

This would also be a good way to find out how many Ubuntu users are out there.

Use Hotmail. No, Gmail. No, Yahoo Mail. Lots of choices already.

Nobody's going to migrate to Ubuntu for a free e-mail account.

And I DEFINITELY don't want my distro nagging my mother to use it's spiffy 'free services'. That's the slippery slope to adware (Intuit, OS X, Windows, etc).

I switched to Linux to get away from those corrupt practices.
No thanks.

Ubuntu ad-suppored web services (backup, storage, email, portal) could be a revenue source to further develop Ubuntu. It could be the first open-source web service. Why not?

Seems like unnecessary cruft, marked down.

Bad idea, wasting precious resources on setting up a free email domain when there are plenty of other ones available.
Just what we need another email account. ;)

Mhm, no. Just use GMail and be happy. :]

Yeah, an Ubuntu.com email address...that will be fun trying to spell it out for someone who doesn't know what Ubuntu is.

Unless Ubuntu have the horsepower to come up with something better than Gmail, I don't think it's worth. -1.

This is pretty cool! I would totally use this.

I think it would be a cool community effort to develop an web-based front-end.

I would help!

would be cool...in the german community ones there was such a project...but canonical don't wanted it (we've asked them if we allowed to use the name "ubuntu" in this context...they said "no"...damn, that was a very hard punch in the face in my case)

Ubuntu developers currently have @ubuntu.com which makes it easy for upstream and debian developers to contact ubuntu developers. If we start giving everyone Ubuntu email addresses, it will be much more difficult to keep track of who is and who isnt a developer, making our interaction with Debian more difficult, which isnt good for the distro.
