Idea #4511: Shut down computer when update complete option

bug This idea was marked as being not considered for implementation the 25 September 11.
Written by bogdan_5844 the 13 Mar 08 at 17:17. Category: System. Related project: Nothing/Others. Status: Won't implement
Rationale
I hate it when I have to do a lenghty update(such as when first installing Ubuntu)but being in a rush and not having enough time to wait for the PC to update in order to shut it down.

I suggest a "Shut down computer when update complete" option in Ubuntu Update Manager.

Solution #1: Auto-generated solution of idea #4511
Written by bogdan_5844 the 13 Mar 08 at 17:17.
Ubuntu Brainstorm was updated in January 2009. Since the idea #4511 was submitted before this update, its rationale and solution are not separated. Please vote accordingly, and if you have the necessary rights, please separate the rationale from the solution. Thanks!

Solution #2: Make an option in shutdown-manager
Written by Blaimi the 26 Jan 09 at 14:09.
If you want to shut down the computer, there should be an option to install the updates before shutting down.

Solution #3: "continue update" option on shutdown
Written by natureflow the 18 Apr 10 at 10:52.
After requesting shutdown during an system update show update status in usplash and then switch off. Like on the operating system of the market leader, but don't start system update on shutdown - like they do -, only continue.

Some updates need user intervention. Without the user, the update would last forever.

I suggest you do this at the evening:
sudo sh -c 'aptitude update; aptitude -yd dist-upgrade; poweroff'

And then do the update in the morning using the normal update manager. Good luck

updates witch need user intervention should have a warning...

happened to me many times, i leave it updating go to sleep and in the morning is not done yet because some package needs the user intervention n stuff

installation of packages should continue once you turn on your pc and log in ubuntu.

i.e: program/package X didn't finish installing, would you like to finish the installation now ?

it would be great to have an option: "just download packages, do not install and shutdown computer after download.."

Updating directly from the CD/DVD please, will be more easier for us.

I don't think this is a good idea, and can constitute for "bloatware" - a small feature needed for a specific population, but not needed by the rest.

There's a bunch of programs that can take care of shutting down for you, or even the first terminal command the guy posted will do it.

I hate to say this.......

Windows XP, and I believe Vista, has an option as to when the updates are automagically applied.....I always had my updates set for 03:00.

When the updates apply, the machine reboots and is waiting at the log in screen the next time I use the system.

The allows the updates to come in and then apply without the user interacting in any way.

Just a thought for those of us who keep the computers running for such things as BOINC

unattended-upgrades could be modified to do this.

The thing is and happens to me. I have a slow connection and sometimes I really have to go, but uptdates haven't even finished downloading. The good choice might be, as my thougth, that it can be an option to install updates, and when the computer is been send to halt, then the update-manager asks wether continue downloading updates, shutdown when finished, and then install on the next run (so in my case can freely go), or stop the downloads and continue another day,

I find that XP often notifies me when I shut it down that it has an update to install, and would I like to finish that before powering off. This is one of the few things I have been grateful to Redmond for.

+1 and wish I had more votes to give (and wish that I would be powering off XP a lot less, as a consequence of using it a lot less in the first place, but alas, it's sometimes required for my work).

In my view 'shutdown after update' and 'update before shutdown' are two completely different ideas.

In my opinion this feature really is a must. Not for myself, but for my parents. See I always run the update manager manually, however my parents simply ignore/don't see the new updates available dialog. Installing updates while running isn't really an option since this most of the time does require at least something to restart (eg firefox/emesene stops working due to it being running while updating in the background).

So especially for them I to requests this feature.

PS. My current solution for them is setting update manager to automatic downloading, but not installing and then running a modified version of unattended-upgrade (which will install anything that doesn't require user interaction (setting is_allowed_origin (line 56) to always return true does this)) as a shutdownscript.

If somebody wants to add this feature to Update Manager, Software Center, the Shutdown dialog, any anywhere else appropriate, your contribution to Ubuntu will be welcome.

Since a huge variety of update options are already available, including update-then-shutdown on the command line, the current Ubuntu developer will look to new participants to contribute this feature.
