Idea #4371: Drag select in Nautilus Please

Written by spacejesus the 12 Mar 08 at 15:38. Category: Look and Feel. Related project: Nothing/Others. Status: New
Rationale
Please consider modifying nautilus to enable drag and select multiple files in Nautilus list view. This is an incredibly annoying deficiency which is not present in virtually any other file manager I have used.

Good idea.
Ubuntu should look at how things are done in other systems, and adopt the good and simple solutions that improve usability without cluttering the interface. Drag and select has no impact on the visual interface whatsoever, so this is a pure bonus (that users of other systems have come to expect).

This problem drives me mad... it definitely needs to be fixed.

I don't think this is even possible in column-mode.
Windows doesn't support it.

Since each line spans the complete horizontal width, how could it distinguish between dragging and selecting?

It would only work when there are fewer files/folders than vertical height .. then you could in theory start a selection below the list.

Perhaps with a special modifier key. Like holding the shift?

But a list-view is coming (which is like icon-mode, except with smaller icons and fixed widths and icons positioned left). There this should be possible.

>Perhaps with a special modifier key. Like holding the shift?

Another solution could be to make files selectable only clicking on the file name (column width), so you could drag from the space of the other attributes (dimension, date ...)

That is not how lists behave. It would be much more confusing if every list behaved one way, except nautilus.

To select multiple files in a list, click a file, then hold the shift key down while you click another file

however...
Possibly you could actually change the behaviour for all gtk lists

maybe you could make a video of what you think it should do

gbordiga's solution is how Windows does it in the Details view, which is it's equivalent to Nautilus' List view.

This really bugs me too. I'm a recent convert from Windows, and this slows me down.

Could it be an option, so that we can turn it on if we want it? I assume the current behavior has been there for a long time, so maybe leave it as the default.

PLEASE FIX THIS BUG!

holding the shift key down while you select is very impractical if you have to select many files inside a foder with hundreds of items in it.
This bug is annoying and should be fixed because it simply makes sense!

I noticed that the file panel in Brasero had this feature before (in Hardy if I remember well)

I would love this feature in Nautilus, but it has to be intelligent (that's why they may have removed it)

- there must be a way to differentiate a dragndrop from a drag selection

- you should still be able to drag-n-drop files, without having to first clic on the file.

- MS Windows considers a dragndrop when you start your drag on a file, and a drag selection when you start your drag outside the filelist (in the blank area). But in Nautilus, in the list view mode, there is no blank area !

Adding a way to select a single file with only one click like in KDEs Dolphin would also be very userfriendly and helpful.

Yes! Please please please add this!!!

I'd like to cast a vote towards this one as well. What if the list view (when there is no free space at the bottom and the user needs to scroll) behaved like certain iPhone apps? For example, you scroll all the way to the very last file in the list, then if you keep scrolling down, it will GIVE you that blank space required for drag-selecting.

The same could be implemented in the top and bottom of the list for highlighting from both ends. Just an idea, as I too have tried again and again to highlight a list of files only to find that I have to switch views or use the keyboard and mouse to accomplish this.

Here's some (hopefully useful) information regarding this idea:

This functionality is currently implemented in several alternative file browsers (XFCE's Thunar, for example). Contrary to a previous post, it is also supported supported in Windows. (You can lasso-select multiple items in the detailed view of Win. Explorer).

Other file managers distinguish dragging versus selecting as follows:

DRAGGING Objects: Accomplished by clicking-and-holding the ICON or NAME of the file that the user desires to move/copy. This is done with either the left mouse button or the right mouse button (which prompts the user to specify either a copy or move action).

SELECTING Objects (lasso/rubber-band): Accomplished by clicking-and-holding any whitespace or text that is NOT the icon or name column of the file. Size, type, and other columns are considered areas that will activate the SELECTION lasso. While holding down the mouse button, the user is free to move the cursor to select multiple items. Additionally, if the user holds down CTRL, the inherent functionality of these keys allows the user to release the mouse button and select a second group of contiguous files. (For example, selecting the first 5 files and the last 5 files in a directory.)

In a nutshell, lasso selection doesn't have to require funky key combinations or other less-intuitive actions, and it isn't hindered by the length or quantity of files populating the working directory of the file manager. Simply allowing the whitespace (and non-name columns) to activate selection, while preserving the name column for drag-and-drop, is all that's necessary. (Of course, implementing this might be a little trickier than it sounds.)

Nautilus is already a great file browser, but if this functionality gets implemented, I can save a lot more of my keyboard time at the terminal! =D

add this feature please...i hate to switch to dolphin all the times i need to do some operations on files.

it is a great limit for me, especially at work.

do something, thanks.

I definitely agree with this, the current situation is hopeless if you are dealing with large numbers of files.

The compact view is pretty useless, since you have no metadata and no sorting options, besides it being totally chaotic. Same goes for icon view, which, in addition, is bloated.

How about adding a 'detailed view', which would mimic the behaviour of Windows explorer? Make metadata non-selectable and make the list sortable by metadata.

For me, this is the most constantly recurring usability problem with Nautilus.
