Description
Yes, i know about songbird, i know about amarok, i know about gtk-pod, i know many people don't want DRM in Ubuntu. But if you have a perfectly working iTunes in Ubuntu you will draw more users. Put it in the partner repos, just like Parallels. You can always display a warning about DRM and propietary software when you choose to install it.

Why will a port of iTunes draw more users? Unsupported hypothesis.

iTunes sucks, its bloated and forces QuickTime and Bonjour and crap down peoples throat.

I agree- iTunes does suck. The problem is when someone has a substantial music library from iTunes that they now can't play in Ubuntu. Also- the alternatives currently available in Ubuntu are lacking, even compared to the iTunes bloatware. Amarok os unusable with the current sound server (I understand that has been fixed in Hardy), and I've found Songbird to be unbelievably slow and unreliable.
This really isn't an Ubuntu issue though. Everyone that uses Ubuntu and wants iTunes need to bug Apple about it. I can't believe it would be all that difficult to port, give OS-X's BSD back-end.

iTunes is the only piece of software that officially supports iPods and Apple wants it that way. So why will iTunes in Ubuntu draw more users? Because their iPhone and iPod Touch will finally work -- they currently don't.
I don't want iTunes on Ubuntu either, but that's what he's saying.

Apple can take their iTunes and port it to where the sun don't shine.

If your DRM hardware don't work with your OS, dump it
and never again buy DRM stuff. Then when nobody buys that
stuff, companies will have to change his strategy, and stop
being so selfish, prepotent, DRMish, and suff. We will
then won a war and not only a little battle. :\

There is absolutely no reason for proprietary software like this to be published.
It has no place in our society.

I don't understand why everyone is so against porting iTunes.
I don't know how many users say that the only reason they can't switch is because they need iTunes!
Be honest, half of you guys are using the restricted drivers and codecs right now. whats the big jump from that to iTunes?
If we could at least push for the release of the code to access the music store and to update EVERY gen iPod. Then we could use whatever other media player you want.
But personally. I love iTunes. and its the only reason I still have a windows partition.

I hate Apple, I can't think of any other devices that are so closed and proprietary. I agree with another poster (killmess) don't buy DRM crap if you want it to work with Linux. But an iTunes port would be nice for all those users with an iPod, even though I would never ever buy an iPod. Ever.

If you want proprietary crap, use a proprietary OS. Stop infesting my Free Operating System with restrictions.

I promote the idea of getting as much software for Ubuntu as possible (even if it is proprietary). Though I don't think that Apple will EVER port ANY of their software to Linux. Windows users had to fight tooth and nail to get the odd app on windows and that was only after M$ has Apple on the ropes back in the late 90's. Face it Apple are xenophobes and want to keep their OS, hardware and apps "pure".

@Eldmannen and XSP;
it is comments like this that limit that tells companies that Linux community is to immature to accept commercial applications that it so desperately needs.
iTunes would be useful as it does contain other things other than DRM.
p.s. i hate OSS advocates.

kahrytan, I think its the otherway round eldmannen and XSP are too immature for the linux community.
Seriously eldmannen and XSP GTFU or STFU, just because you dont use flash or play mp3s doesnt mean nobody else would, i mean linus uses adobe flash FFS, he friking coded the OS and your gunna tell him to "use a proprietary OS. Stop infesting my Free Operating System with restrictions." i think youll find its actually HIS OS and because its open him and the rest of us are free to do what we want with it.
I dont see why this got voted down, more software = more choice = good,
Personally i dont use apple products because theyre far to restrictive but if other want to use itunes, its not my place to restrict them.

The reality is, irregardless of the idea, I worked at a Apple premium reseller for 3 years, and I guarentee, there is no chance of this happening.
Apple actually laughs at Linux. And we actually compete against them more directly then apple, so a port for them is a really bad idea, because it will just improve linux popularity and take away market share. The only reason they did it on windows was for more penetration of the MP3 player market.
On linux, at this point of time, it actually reduces their profits.
So -1. I KNOW that its a waste of resources to even bother.

And just so people know, I'm not trying to start a flamewar. Its the honest truth, ask any Apple system engineer and they will laugh at you
