Idea #4248: Create and Ubuntu Service Pack (SP) like Microsoft Windows

Related to: Nothing/Others. Status: New
Description
Please create and Ubuntu Service Pack (SP1, SP2, etc) like MS Windows.

If the user have to install Ubuntu, and there are a lot of updates, it will be easier to download an Ubuntu Service Pack (SP) with all the new updates, fixed bugs, etc.

Also it is very helpful for an IT team when they have to install or reinstall Ubuntu into several machines.

Regards

Felix

The fact that Ubuntu can update itself over night means you just need to load the latest version of Ubuntu (ie 7.10) and then set every computer to update at 00:00hrs.

Service packs are needed for OSs like Windows because they tend to do bulk updates once known defects are discovered. Ubuntu like most Open Source OSs does updates all the time as people submit and approve patches to the system (check out Linus' Law on Wikipedia). As a result the closes thing to a service pack would be a system upgrade (ie. 7.06 to 7.10). Making a service pack for Ubuntu would be time consuming and ultimately useless.

Windows service packs' are released at most at the rhythm of one per year... Ubuntu has a new version released each 6 months, I don't think we have the time to create and deploy service packs :)
I prefer having an up-to-date downloadable ISO each month, that can be used as an APT package source for already-installed systems.

No need to. I HATE service packs.
Sorry man :)

Yes I too disagree on the whole service pack thing, Ubuntu is not Windows and does not need it, because updates are being done all the time. No need for Ubuntu Service Packs!

Ubuntu releases new versions more often than Microsoft releases Windows service packs. XD

Ubuntu already has the tools for an 'IT team' to customize their install with the latest packages, and to set a custom update policy for all machines on the network.

No need to muck about with 'service packs' at all. Linux is not Windows, and an 'IT team' needs to change their priorities and workflow accordingly...

If you're worried about bandwidth, just host your own internal repository.

if you install ubuntu gutsy now, you have to do over 200 mb of updates! it's very stupid. Refresh the iso or give a media to upgrade the pc without internet. it's the sense of a 'service pack' 'upgrade cd' '...' or something else.

As an option for those who have no internet on the computer and download from another, why not?

Service Packs for Windows are just for publicity IMO (all the papers start writing about them) and just silently upgrading piece by piece is much better.

This is what new releases are for.. Its the same idea. 8.04, -> 8.10 is really kinda a service pack

-100 Rating, but the idea is implemented...

The new point releases are Service-Packs directly integrated in the installation CD. This is much better then a normal Service Pack. And I'm sure that you can use these CD to upgrade your System too.

Well, If you haven't Internet, Why not?

I like the Idea too. Why downloading Ubuntu 8.04 and then downloading 300MB of Patches... And if you want to use your old CD, you can do it too.

Probably it is a higher risk if you go online with an 7 Month unpatched Version in comparison to an 1 Month unpatched Version.

They already did an 8.04.1
basically the same thing.

Moderators should close this idea because it is already realized...
