Idea #4152: Live CD needs optimizing

Description
The live CD is the first thing many people see when trying Ubuntu and it can be a turtle even on the best systems. This is hardly putting our best face forward.

The Live CD needs to be better optimized for responsiveness to make for a better user experience.

Addendum:

The constraints of a Live CD are hard to work with especially all the different hardware out there. I think with the Live CD less is more.
Most people that take it as a test drive are going to look through the menus for things that look familiar to what they know and try browsing the net. For the most part they are not going to be doing anything intensive. I think one option is reducing the memory footprint and services loaded. I'm sure there are other suggestions that you and the developers may have.

On my dell dimension 9200 the livecd is unbearable slow, I would prefer an old fashioned cd, without having to boot into ubuntu before the installation.

Core 2 Duo, takes about 6-7 minutes to boot. +1

It may have a slow booting but hardy alpha 5 Live CD was very responsive in my computer.
Anyway, could you please add more information about your idea? How would you accomplish that?

I'm afraid that an idea "x thing should be better" doesn't help much if you don't propose something useful to accomplish it.

When I first got into Ubuntu, Breezy Badger was just coming into the light of day. Upon its release, I ordered a CD from the ShipIt site so that I may dabble with this new Linux distribution I never heard of. Breezy shipped with 2 CDs. One CD was a LiveCD and the other was an Install CD. Food for thought.

Maybe remove some things in the session like userswitcher for example. It can be some Memory.

Not to bolster my own idea, but I would submit that idea #5814 is not the same idea as this one. These two ideas are definitely *related*, but I gather that #4152 is oriented toward reducing complexity for the end user (and simultaneously memory footprint), while #5814 is about effectively using an apparently available resource (memory).

Both would improve (speed-up, reduce latency) overall user experience, but from different standpoints. Idea #4152 aims to optimize the LiveCD, and #5814 aims to optimize speed-of-access *to* the LiveCD. It's a subtle, but tangible difference. Perhaps #5814 is mis-titled?

Does Ubuntu really need a live cd?
