Idea #4129: Shift away from Evolution and towards Thunderbird/Sunbird

Description
Evolution has a great feature set. It allows me to use the exchange server at work, almost works with the exchange calendar, can sync with a palm, and a number of other handy features.

However, Evolution kind of blows as an email client. Thunderbird is a huge step up. Sunbird integration is *almost* there.

Please consider shifting support to bringing both sunbird and thunderbird up to speed in features and support it as the primary application in Ubuntu. Both applications are more attractive, more usable, and more stable than Evolution.

I'm very satisfied with Evolution as a mail client, aswell as a full PIM.

One of the things that I like the most about Gnome is Evolution, and I think it's a great default.

I think Evolution (especially the next version in Hardy Heron) is great. Let's wait for Thunberbird 3.0 before taking any decision.

As a full PIM, evolution is much better than Thunderbird with all its extensions. I will wait for Thunderbird 3 or some mail client in new OpenOffice, they could be better, but for now, Evolution is good enough.

IMHO, Evolution is way better than thunderbird.

I'm not voting for or against this bug, but I personally think it's important for Ubuntu to have a complete PIM (ala Outlook) rather than an email-only app (ala Outlook Express). So I definitely prefer Evolution over Thunderbird. Maybe you (OP) can submit ideas for improving Evolution?

while evolution is good, switching to thunderbird might be a good move especially since new comers are familiar with it in windows.

evolution is not cross platform that i know off.

but if you uninstall evolution some functions in gnome don't work ("about me")... this should be fixed.

I'd actually like exactly the opposite - not only keep Evolution, but dump Firefox as the DEFAULT for the GNOME desktop, in favour of Epiphany, which is the GNOME default anyway. Much better desktop integration, none of the hassles with trademarks etc. that the Debian guys have been having, and if there's a Firefox extension you can't live without, you're already familiar with installing add-on software, so installing Firefox should be a breeze :)
