Rationale
Enough with the OSX style swirls. From now on lets have a striking image FOR EVERY RELEASE. The current 8.04 wallpaper is just so much more stylish and rememberable than generic swirls.
My suggestion would be to make each wallpaper tie in with the animal name. Like there were some pretty cool Gibson graphics being used on tshirts and the like but why couldn't they have been used as part of the wallpaper? They would have been just as striking as the new Heron one.
I think there is perhaps a side benefit to using the animal name as every graphical designer gets 8 months heads up on the next name and hence the next theme of the graphic, so there should be no reason why come release time you wont have a bunch of cool graphics to choose from.
I agree with the general idea of coupling every Ubuntu release's art to the animal from the codename. It makes every release more recognizable and is good for branding. Better than having the animal only represented in the name.
Gutsy's wallpaper looked like a Vista lookalike. Please don't just copy other desktops.
This is a great idea! It also makes it easier for new users to know witch version they are running - they will not be in doubt when they see the horns of Ibex ;-)
WOW!!!!!! This is head and shoulders better than any linux DVD covers I've seen. This shows the potential of what you can do with one strong graphic used across many aspects of the Ubuntu branding.
Yep, the hardy heron wallpaper rocks (the new human-murrine theme too)! Would be very cool if the wallpapers were themed their release's animal too. :D
I think it would be great to have a wallpaper for each release to be styled in the same way the Hardy one is, but with the animal that the release was named after on it.
http://www.wallpapers-room.com - here are some great, great wallpapers. Just talk to the guys who made them and use them in new Ubuntu. (sort by most downloaded!)
